BANGOR – In an effort to help reverse the declining number of farmers and ranchers across the United States, USDA’s Farm Service Agency in Maine is extending help to socially disadvantaged farmers, ranchers and agricultural producers.

The agency defines “socially disadvantaged” as a group whose members have been subjected to racial, ethnic or gender prejudice because of their identity as a member of the group without regard to individual qualities. Such groups include women, blacks, American Indians, Alaskan Natives, Hispanics, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

Applicants must meet the eligibility requirements for a given program before FSA can extend benefits. For information about this or other programs, contact the agency at the county USDA Service Center.
