Scrapbooking event to benefit animal shelters

Cropping for Paws, a marathon scrapbooking event to benefit three nonprofit animal shelters, will be held 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, April 29, at Jeff’s Catering in Brewer, and it is open not only to scrapbookers but to the public as well.

However, it makes a difference if you are a scrapbooker or just an interested observer.

If you are a scrapbooker and want to participate, the admission fee, including lunch, is $25, and you must reserve your table space by today, by either calling organizer Rhonda Edgecomb at 299-4100 or e-mailing her at Cropping4Paws@aol.com.

All proceeds benefit the Bangor Humane Society, Maine Coon Hound Rescue and Morse’s Feline Rescue Foundation.

Edgecomb told me the event also includes “a silent auction and seven scrapbooking vendors from various scrapbooking companies.

“We have several silent-auction items available, and we invite the public to come and browse the silent auction and bid on items and visit the vendors,” she said, adding that “there is no charge for the general public to attend” the benefit.

“We will also have representatives from Bangor Humane Society and Maine Coon Hound Rescue, along with special furry guests” for the browsers to see and visit with.

Edgecomb, an “adoptive mother to three shelter pets from the Bangor Humane Society,” told me she “wanted to do more” for BHS, “but I can’t adopt” any more pets, so she decided to join with “several other animal lovers” to “help give back to BHS and other nonprofits” by hosting this benefit.

Visitors to the benefit are encouraged to bring any of the following supplies to donate to local shelters: paper towels, unscented bleach, sturdy rubber gloves, towels, washable blankets, new dog or cat toys, cat mats, dog or cat treats, dog collars or leashes and cat litter.

Cropping for Paws is an opportunity for people to “mix two passions,” Edgecomb said, of “our love for animals and our love for this hobby.”

Another goal of this event, she added, “is to educate people on responsible pet ownership.”

So, if you’re a scrapbooker, register now for Cropping for Paws.

If you’re an animal lover, just stop by, maybe make a donation and browse!

The Epic 5K Trail Run begins with registration at 7:30 a.m., and the run, which also welcomes walkers, will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 28, at Bangor City Forest.

The entry fee is $10 in advance and $15 the day of the race, and advance registration can be paid at Epic Sports, 6 Central St. in Bangor. Forms are also available at www.epicsportsofmaine.com.

Gift certificates will be awarded to male and female winners, and overall winners will each receive a pair of Vasque trail running shoes.

Proceeds benefit the Bangor Humane Society.

To reach Bangor City Forest from Interstate 95, take Exit 187 onto Hogan Road toward Stillwater Avenue. Go straight from Hogan Road onto Kittredge Road at the light, and continue for one mile to the end of the road, parking along the road. A registration tent and portable bathrooms will be on the site, and you are asked not to enter City Forest from Tripp Drive.
