Siena rallies by UM Late DeFilippo single foils Bears

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Jason DeFilippo stroked a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning Thursday, giving Siena College the margin of victory in a 4-2 baseball decision over the University of Maine.

The Black Bears slipped to 13-21 heading into their four-game America East series at Albany that begins today.

Sophomore lefthander Jose Mendoza (1-1) took the loss, despite allowing only five hits and a run in five innings. Mike Powers gave up three runs and three hits in a three-inning relief stint.

Joel Barrett of Brewer paced the UMaine offense with a double, a single and an RBI, while freshman Tavis Hasenfus of Winthrop provided two singles. Danny Menendez doubled.

Nine different Siena pitchers combined to limit the Bears to nine hits. Chris Klepps singled twice to lead the Saints (5-26), while DeFilippo added the key blow.

UMaine posted seven of its nint hits in the final four innings, but could muster only two runs. The Bears went 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position.

Leading 2-0, Siena scored two big runs in the seventh against Powers. Gary DerHagopian worked a one-out walk and Michael Ambury was hit by a pitch. Both advanced on a flyout, then scored on DeFilippo’s single through the middle.

UMaine got on the board in the eighth when Billy Cather walked and Matt McGraw singled through the left side. After Curt Smith grounded into a fielder’s choice, Barrett did likewise to push a run across.

Kevin Jackson followed with a single, but Kevin McAvoy flied out to right to end the threat.

Hasenfus opened the UMaine ninth with a single, took second on a balk, and reached third on a wild pitch that also was ball four to Brian Hackett. Danny Menendez struck out, but Cather stroked an RBI single through the middle to make it 4-2.

Will Hassett got McGraw to pop up to second base and got Smith on a game-ending grounder.

Siena took a 1-0 lead in the first on Phil Cahill’s run-scoring single, then made it 2-0 in the sixth when Klepps singled, moved up on a sacrifice, stole third and came home on former Black Bear Moises Rivera’s single to left.
