Fryeburg student has bacterial meningitis

FRYEBURG – A Fryeburg Academy student who recently returned from an overseas trip has been diagnosed with bacterial meningitis, officials said.

The student fell ill last week but meningitis wasn’t confirmed until Friday, said Geoff Beckett, state assistant epidemiologist in Augusta. The disease can be deadly, but the teenager is doing well, Beckett said.

School officials believe the teen contracted the disease on a trip to Spain with classmates. Meningitis is spread by close contact, and members of the travel group and the teen’s family are taking antibiotics as a precaution.

The illness is rare in Maine. Maine typically records only 10 to 12 cases of meningitis a year, Beckett said.
