Sullivan provides scoring punch in win

BUCKSPORT – Keely Sullivan didn’t walk to the plate in the bottom of the second inning of Tuesday afternoon’s game against John Bapst intending to hit a home run.

The Bucksport High softball team’s starting pitcher was thinking, however, that it might be nice to make up for the home run she had allowed in the top of the second.

Sullivan more than made up the Crusaders’ homer. Her own shot over the 197-foot left-field fence provided the eventual game-winning runs in a 7-1 victory over John Bapst of Bangor.

Sullivan did more than homer for the 5-0 defending Class B state champions. She walked and scored in the fourth inning, and added a double and scored another run in the sixth.

The home run, which came on a 1-2 dropball, also plated Katie Hurd, who had doubled. The runs gave Bucksport a 2-1 lead.

“I wasn’t really thinking about hitting one,” Sullivan said. “I was just thinking, I had two strikes so I was looking for the base hit. I took a timeout, just tried to gather myself, and just tried to make contact.”

Sullivan shut down the Crusaders after giving up a two-out solo homer to Sheila Toomey in the top of the second. Toomey’s homer cleared the 200-foot fence in left-center.

“That was a meatball right down the middle,” Sullivan said. “I didn’t know how she’d hit it, if she had a big stick, but I guess she did. First pitch and she rocked it.”

The top of the Bucksport lineup was relatively quiet, but the middle and bottom of the order came through. The first four batters went a combined 1-for-11, while batters 5-9 were 6-for-13.

For just the second time in her stellar career, Bucks standout Terren Hall, the No. 3 hitter, couldn’t muster a hit in a game, said her father Terry Hall, the assistant to longtime head coach Michael Carrier.

“It’s good for us,” Terry Hall said. “We planned all year that if we get into tight playoff games and teams intentionally walk Terren, everybody else has to pick their game up.”

Alex Sullivan (no relation to Keely Sullivan), singled and scored twice and added an RBI. Kayla Allen and Caitlin Briedt each had an RBI single, while Sarrah Winters didn’t get a hit but did put the ball into play twice to move baserunners.

“Our whole lineup can hit great,” Kayla Allen said. “We had all that snow and all we could do was hit inside. That was our main priority and we’ve got it down now.”

Bapst pitcher Daniele Richard worked her dropball for five strikeouts.

“We talked a lot about [how to pitch to] Terren and the girls around her,” said Bapst coach Bill Baker, whose daughter, former Bangor High catcher Heidi Baker, is an assistant coach who called the game.

“It was the bottom [of Bucksport’s order] that got us today,” Bill Baker added.

Bucksport center fielder Katie Allen (no relation to Kayla Allen) made two nice defensive plays, recorded consecutive flyouts on hard-hit balls dropping in front of her in the fourth inning.
