Huskies stop Lions in 11th

PITTSFIELD – Kristen Sousa scored on an infield pop that landed between the pitcher and the catcher with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning as Maine Central Institute edged Belfast 1-0 in high school softball action Monday.

Mandy Kennedy, who earned the win in relief, hit the popup that plated Sousa. Jordan Kennedy struck out 17 and allowed just two hits in the pitchers’ duel. Hilary Bickford and Sousa each singled for the Huskies, who stranded runners in the seventh, eighth, and 10th innings.

Belfast’s Stephanie Whittier fanned 13 and gave up four hits. Brianna Webster and Brooke Reed each singled for the Lions.

At Lee, Brooke Harris pitched a five-inning no-hitter, striking out five and walking one as Lee Academy won its third game.

Amanda Gifford singled twice, knocked in a run, and scored another for the Pandas, who took advantage of nine Deer Isle-Stonington walks and one hit batsman.

Aarika Ritchie singled, scored three runs, and drove in another for the Mariners, and Katelyn Mallett singled and scored.

At Howland, Casey McCloskey pitched seven innings allowing two hits with 10 strikeouts to lead Penobscot Valley past Penquis of Milo.

Kristie Dawson had a single with a pair of RBIs while Jamie Milton, Melissa Batchelder and McCloskey each added a single for the Howlers.

Erica Lyford had a triple with two RBIs while Morgan Royal added a double for Penquis.

At Old Town, Brittany Gould led off the top of the eighth with a double, then Sam Gray and Crystal Johnson belted back-to-back RBI singles to lift Skowhegan past Old Town.

Gray added a triple and Gould notched a single. Caitlin Steward tallied 16 strikeouts.

Ashley Goodwin had two singles and an RBI and Devin Levesque doubled for the Coyotes.

Dominique Defilipp hit three singles and Julie Lorenz added a singled and an RBI. Jordan McLain struck out 14 for the Witches.

At Lee, Collin Ciomei and Rob Brown led off the game with back-to-back home runs to get the Mariners started en route to the five-inning triumph.

Bryant Ciomei knocked a two-run double and Jon Eaton an RBI double for Deer Isle-Stonington.

Ryan Beers and Devan Parker both singled for the Lee Academy Pandas.

Roy Burdin notched two singles and Nathan Johnston singled with two RBIs. Tobey Cleaves chipped in an RBI for the Pirates.
