From the description given by Brewer Kiwanis Club secretary Herb Hopkins of that organization’s first “So You Think You Have Talent” show, this is one performance you don’t want to miss.

“So You Think You Have Talent” is at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 19, in the gymnasium at Brewer High School.

VIP tickets for special seating are $35. Others are $15 for adults, $10 for children under 12, $35 for a family of two adults and two children.

Tickets can be purchased in advance at Roy & Associates, 209 State St., Bangor, or in Brewer at Brewer Public Library; Awards, Signage & Trophies, 48 Stevens Road; or Mark’s Music, 203 Penobscot Square.

Tickets also will be available at the door.

Hopkins wrote, “incredible and outstanding are the two words to describe the 24 acts that were selected” from among 56 applications.

Media personality Ric Tyler will be the master of ceremonies, introducing these “talented people” who will perform for you, Hopkins wrote.

“All monies raised will go toward local children’s charities,” he added, “so get your tickets and enjoy a wonderful show.”

Sharon and Harry Rideout remind readers that, since 1950, Armed Forces Day has been celebrated the third Saturday of May.

In honor of that special day, this year the Hermon couple decided to organize an Armed Forces Day Observance beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 19, in the auditorium of Hermon High School.

The ceremony is being conducted “under the auspices of Hermon American Legion Post No. 200,” the couple wrote, and will feature U.S. Air Force Capt. Michael Frasco, “one of eight service members selected to be part of the public outreach program, ‘Why We Serve.'”

That program, the Rideouts, wrote, “was initiated, last fall by U.S. Marine Gen. Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon, to have returning military personnel tell about their experiences while serving in Iraq, Afghanistan or the Horn of Africa.

“It is an honor to have him [Frasco] come to our area,” they wrote, and they hope you join them for this event.

Members of HHS Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps will present the colors and other military organizations will be represented as well.

Preceding the ceremony will be a public baked bean supper, beginning at 4:30 p.m. at the Hermon Rescue Squad facility on Billings Road. Admission is $5 for adults, $2.50 for children.

The public is cordially invited to attend both events.

There is no charge to attend the Armed Forces Day Observance.

Alma Homola is coordinator of the 51st annual Green Thumb Sale 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, May 19, at Church of Universal Fellowship on Main Street in Orono.

She and Cathy Marquez of the board of deacons are “calling all gardeners” to attend this event for which, they report, “there will be a large selection of flowering and foliage perennial plants, bulbs, saplings and shrubs, as well as annual plants appropriate for hanging baskets and flower boxes.”

They also want you to know “volunteers will be available for advice on the best plants for your garden whether it is shady, receives full sun, or just morning or afternoon sun,” and urge you to “come early for the best selection.”

Proceeds help support church outreach programs for local, national and international organizations serving those in need.

Pat Beckwith and everyone associated with Ronald McDonald House invites you to join them as they Fire Up the Grill at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 19, at Ronald McDonald House, 654 State St. in Bangor.

The event is a class in which you will learn how to cook Southern barbecue, as well as eat it as prepared by chef Larry Grieco who will grill chicken, shrimp and steak, and use the grill to make pizza. Rubs and sauces will be for sale.

The cost is $20 per person; and includes the class, recipes and meal.

The fundraiser will be held rain or shine and you must register by calling 942-9003.
