Juvenile apprehended in woods after car chase

CALAIS – A 17-year-old Perry youth, who over the weekend led police on a chase through the city in a stolen vehicle, was apprehended near the Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge on Route 1.

The youth, who was not identified by police because he is under age, was charged on Saturday with unauthorized use of property, eluding an officer and driving to endanger.

Calais police took him to the Mountain View Juvenile Correction Facility in Charleston on Saturday, Sgt. David Randall said Monday.

It all started around 7:25 p.m. Saturday when the juvenile allegedly stole a car from the Pleasant Point Reservation, but later abandoned the vehicle on the Charlotte Road. He somehow got to Calais.

At the Milltown Munch, formerly Clark’s Variety Store on North Street, the male juvenile stole an older model Grand Cherokee that belonged to Cecil Rowe of Calais. The keys were in the car.

Officer Chris Scott saw the vehicle and turned on his blue lights. The car took off and Scott pursued. The juvenile abandoned the car on Route 1, near the refuge, after it blew a tire. He was later apprehended without incident in the woods.

“If anyone witnessed the event give Officer Scott a call [at 454-2751],” Randall said.

In other news, police on Wednesday summoned Justin Small, 18, of Charlotte and charged him with criminal speeding.

On Thursday, Britney Foss, 20, of Calais was charged with theft after she allegedly stole $41 worth of merchandise from Marden’s Surplus and Salvage on Main Street.

On Saturday, police charged Keith Hunter, 45, of Little Ridge, New Brunswick, with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants, and Philip Brown, 43, of Calais with criminal trespass as a result of an incident at 15 Lowell Street.

On Sunday, police charged Daniel Barnard, 23, of Calais with OUI. They also charged Daniel Morehouse, 59, of Key West, Fla., with OUI. Police arrested Jason Murphy, 31, of Tower Hill, New Brunswick, on a warrant of failure to appear. They also summoned him for operating after suspension.
