Lewiston boy knocked out of D.C. spelling bee

LEWISTON – Maine’s representative to the National Spelling Bee was tripped up on the opening day Wednesday.

Klaas Pruiksma, a sixth-grader at Lewiston’s Montello School, misspelled the word “raisiny” in the second round. He spelled it “rasiny.”

Spelling Bee officials added up the points from a written test and from the second round, and 109 of the original 286 spellers advanced.

Pruiksma won the state spelling bee to earn the right to represent Maine at the 80th annual Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee. The event is being held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Washington, D.C.
