Hundreds of local children will be aiming for first place finishes this weekend at the Eastern Maine Soap Box Derby in Bangor and the Midcoast Maine Soap Box Derby in Camden.
Both events are scheduled for Saturday, but racing activities will be going on all weekend.
Today in Bangor, local media personalities will compete on the Buck Street course, starting at noon, while test runs get under way at 1 p.m..
Activities begin at 7 a.m. Saturday with a drivers meeting, then the Parade of Racers and cars up Buck Street at 8, and the first race of the day at 9.
The Super Kids races start at 11 a.m., the sponsors’ race at noon and the Race of Champions at 4. Awards will be presented at the gazebo in front of the Bangor Auditorium.
Motorists should note lower Buck Street will be shut down from Sunnyside Greenhouse to Main Street today until 5 p.m. Saturday.
At Camden, practice runs begin at 3 p.m. today at the fire station on Washington Street. Racing starts at 9 a.m. Saturday.
