Traffic snarled after truck accident in Hampden

Traffic was backed up for about an hour Friday morning in Hampden after a dump truck towing a utility trailer spilled its load of large pipes.

The dump truck, owned by MacMillan Excavation of Bangor, lost its load at about 7:30 a.m. at the intersection of Western Avenue and Route 1A.

“When it went around the corner, apparently the load shifted,” said Hampden police Sgt. Dan Stewart. The straps holding the load snapped and big metal pipes rolled into the intersection.

The four-lane road was reduced to two lanes, and traffic was backed up during the morning commute for people coming from Winterport, Stewart said.

The pipes were rolled off to the side of the road until after the morning rush, and a fork truck was brought in to reload the trailer.

A Bangor man was arrested Friday afternoon after the loss prevention officer at the Airport Mall Hannaford saw him shove a bottle of Bacardi Big Apple rum down the front of his pants, according to a police report.

The report said the officer confronted John Toolin, 50, outside the store after he saw Toolin take two bottles of alcohol off the shelf, put the Bacardi bottle in his pants, and pay for a bottle of Smirnoff at the register.

Toolin removed the Bacardi from his pants and put it on the ground at the prevention officer’s request. Toolin was allowed to leave, but the officer called police about the incident, according to the report. Moments later, Bangor police Officer Bruce Buchanan saw Toolin and another man on Godfrey Boulevard, near the Union Street plaza. After talking to both men, Buchanan arrested Toolin for violating bail conditions and theft.

The Bacardi was valued at $14.99, and Toolin had bail conditions that forbade him from possessing or consuming alcohol. He was taken to Penobscot County Jail where he remained Friday night. (Aimee Dolloff, BDN)
