2007 UM Alumni Association awards announced

The following are recipients of the 2007 Alumni Awards presented by the University of Maine Alumni Association as part of its Reunion Weekend celebration that was held Friday, June 1, to Sunday, June 3:

. Alumni Career Award (UMAA’s highest honor): Col. William Smullen, Class of 1962, Fayetteville, N.Y. A retired colonel in the United States Army, Smullen served as former chief of staff for Secretary of State Colin Powell. He currently serves as director of the Maxwell School of Citizenship & Public Affairs at Syracuse University.

. Bernard Lown ’42 Humanitarian Award (in recognition of graduates who distinguish themselves in humanitarian service): Pamela White, 1971, Dulles, Va., is mission director of the United States Agency of International Development, currently serving in Tanzania. White works in HIV-AIDS prevention, malaria control and primary education.

. Fogler Legacy Award (presented to families with multigeneration graduates of UM): Freeman family patriarch George Freeman, 1903.

. Pine Tree Emblem Alumni Service Award (alumni service award for outstanding service in promoting alumni work): Bion Foster, 1968, Hampden.

. Black Bear Award (for outstanding service to UM): Gary Cran, 1962, Owls Head; Al Hopkins, 1950, Hudson, N.H.; Amos Orcutt, 1964, Bangor; Lew Pearson, 1963, Falls Church, Va.

. Block “M” Award (alumni activities award to recognize good will for UM through work in local organizations, class activities and the Alumni Association): Perry Hunter, 1952, Stonington; Doug Kneeland, 1953, Lincoln; Jeff Mills 1982, West Long Branch, N.J.; Elizabeth Hibbard Smith, 1957, Phippsburg; Charles Stanhope, 1971, Hyattsville, Md.

. Hilda Sterling ’55 Class Correspondent Award (recognition of an alumnus or alumna for exemplary service to the class as class correspondent): Marion Libby Broaddus, 1942, Westbrook.

All honorees will be recognized at the Alumni Association Awards Breakfast on Sunday, June 3, at the UM Memorial Union during Reunion Weekend 2007.
