Blue Hill to celebrate Flag of Honor Program

Last November, I wrote about the launching of the Flag of Honor Program for the town of Blue Hill.

The plan was for members of the public to purchase flags in honor of family members and-or friends in the military or civil service, and the flags would be attached to telephone poles in the community, to be flown on special occasions.

Now comes word from Tom Kelly, chairman of the Blue Hill Flag of Honor Committee, that a Memorial Monument Dedication Ceremony is planned for 10 a.m. Flag Day, Thursday, June 14, at Duffy-Wescott American Legion Post No. 85, at 13 Tenney Hill in Blue Hill.

Galen Cole, founder of the Cole Land Transportation Museum in Bangor, will be the guest of honor and will be recognized “for all he has done to support the town of Blue Hill” and its Flag of Honor program, Kelly said.

The dedication ceremony will focus on a monument that will have encased in it a granite slab with the names of the 120 honorees and the names of those who sponsored them.

“To enhance this event,” Kelly told me, “the bell in the tower of the Legion building will toll 120 times.”

Maine state dignitaries and representatives of several organizations have been invited to participate, and “the public is invited to attend and join in tribute of those being honored,” Kelly said.

Refreshments will be served after the ceremony.

Mike Cornett reports the Maine Air Museum on Maine Avenue at Bangor International Airport is open for the season from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays.

And, although it’s late, members of the Maine Aviation Historical Society are reminded the organization meets at 10 a.m. today at MAM.

Betty Littlefield, president of Brooks Historical Society, invites you to its first open house of the season from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 10, at the Pilley Homestead on Route 7 in Brooks.

There is no admission fee, she said, but “donations are gratefully accepted.”

The open house will include refreshments and new exhibits using “the new items we’ve acquired,” Littlefield said.

Merryspring Nature Center invites you to a brown bag lunch to hear Kerry Hardy discuss Essential Woody Plants for Maine Landscapes at noon Tuesday, June 12, at Merryspring’s open-air Hexagon, 30 Conway Road in Camden. Admission is free for members and $5 for nonmembers.

Sponsored by The First, this is the second in a 13-week series of talks.

Before or after the talk, you are encouraged to enjoy the gardens surrounding the gazebo and visit the main office of the park.

The 10th annual Meridian Lodge Golf Tournament is coming right up, reports Mike Lange.

The 18-hole scramble begins with registration at 8 a.m. and a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 16, at J.W. Parks Golf Course in Pittsfield.

Team fees are $240 for a foursome or $60 for singles.

For more information or to pre-register, call J.W. Parks at 487-5545 or Ross Fitts at 487-5718.

Lange reports proceeds “from sponsors and entrants will help the fraternal organization continue its support of worthwhile community projects,” including donations to the Pittsfield Public Library and Donna Leavitt Furman Student Center at Maine Central Institute in that community.

Walter Boomsma of Valley Grange 144 in Guilford wrote to Grangers and friends that Valley Grange is conducting a raffle to benefit the Wayne and Tootie Bennett family, whose name “is certainly familiar in Grange circles as well as historical circles and the community at large.”

According to Boomsma, the Bennetts have endured “a number of misfortunes this year,” ranging from a death in the family to health problems, an accident and job loss.

To help them through this difficult time, “Valley Grange is doing one of our fast-track raffles,” Boomsma wrote of the raffle for $100 worth of lobster or gas at a local supplier of your choice.

Tickets are $1 each and can be purchased from any Grange member or at WDME in Dover-Foxcroft.

The drawing will take place during the annual Valley Grange Yard Sale on June 23 at the Grange.

For more information about this raffle, call Boomsma at 876-4131, or write to Mary Annis, Valley Grange secretary, 28 Orchard Road, Dover-Foxcroft 04426.
