BANGOR – The masked teenager who pointed a loaded gun at a clerk in a convenience store on Valentine’s Day, then fled empty-handed when the owner asked whether he and his juvenile companion were idiots pleaded guilty Wednesday to robbery.

Kevin McAvoy, 19, of Bucksport is scheduled to be sentenced in Penobscot County Superior Court on June 29, the same day that Craig Withee, 18, of Prospect – who drove the getaway car – is scheduled to plead guilty for his part in the robbery.

McAvoy has been held at the Penobscot County Jail, unable to make bail since his arrest. He did not address the court Wednesday.

Jonathan Hayes, 17, of Bucksport admitted last week that he had taken part in the robbery. The juvenile was sentenced on June 11 in 3rd District Court in Bangor to Mountain View Youth Development Center in Charleston until he turns 20.

The plot to rob a store was devised, according to court documents, while the three were “hanging out” at Withee’s home while his parents were at Disney World in Orlando, Fla.

The robbery occurred at the Neighbor-Hood Market on the corner of Stillwater Avenue and Grove Street in Bangor.

Deputy District Attorney Michael Roberts said a plea agreement calls for McAvoy to be sentenced to eight years in prison with all but 31/2 years suspended and three years of probation. Although McAvoy pleaded guilty to armed robbery, Roberts dropped the mention of a firearm so the defendant would not face a mandatory four-year sentence in prison.

Roberts said after the hearing that he would recommend Withee serve less time because he did not enter the store and does not have a juvenile record as McAvoy does.
