East stars roll in A-B game; C-D ends in tie Griffin named Miss Maine Softball

AUGUSTA – Even though Thursday evening’s Maine Association of Softball Coaches’ C-D Senior All-Star Game ended in a 4-4 tie, and the A-B game was a blowout, the outcome of this year’s contests will be memorable for Hodgdon’s Amanda Scott and Bucksport’s Terren Hall.

It was Scott’s two-run triple in the bottom of the ninth that gave the Eastern Maine all-stars some life and led to the tying run in the annual game for the state’s top seniors at Cony Family Field.

In the A-B game, the East all-stars pounded out 13 hits, including a historic home run by Hall, en route to a 13-3 victory over the West.

In between the two games, Scarborough pitcher Kelsey Griffin was named Miss Maine Softball by the Maine Association of Softball Coaches.

In the C-D game, Scott got just the pitch she wanted to drive in Penobscot Valley of Howland’s Jamie Milton (fielder’s choice) and Sumner of East Sullivan’s Nicky Sargent (single).

“It was right down the middle. I like the outside ones, too, and it was right down the middle and outside,” Scott said. “I just went up thinking, have fun. My biggest thing was I didn’t want to strike out. I just wanted to make contact with the ball.”

The game ended in the tie even after the teams resorted to the ASA tiebreaker, in which the team up to bat gets a baserunner at second base and tries to get her home, for the 10th inning.

The East was quiet for much of the game, finally getting a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to cut the West’s lead to 3-1. Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook’s Kaylea Collier recorded the run when she was hit by a pitch, advanced on a passed ball and a wild pitch and came home on a groundout by Lindsey Mingo of Calais.

“I think we were nervous at first,” Scott said. “A lot of the girls were saying they we nervous even though they knew they shouldn’t be. I know I was. It took some time. I got out my first time up, but I hit my second time up. I knew I had to try my hardest.”

The East tried to rally in the bottom of the eighth when Washington Academy of East Machias’ Ashley Tilton singled to right-center and then Central of Corinth’s Chantel Randall recorded an infield hit, but they were stranded at third and second, respectively.

The West struck early, scoring a run in the top of the third inning, and then took advantage of an error and a wild pitch to score two runs in the seventh.

In the A-B game, the East had a seven-run, five-hit sixth inning to put the game out of reach, but it was a solo home run by Hall in the bottom of the seventh that provided the fireworks.

Hall’s homer, which more than cleared the 190-foot fence in right field, was the first ever hit at the one-year-old softball complex. She was also named the Eastern Maine Class B Player of the Year earlier in the evening.

In the sixth, Cony’s Jess Golden and Messalonskee of Oakland’s Stacey Stuart each hit a two-run double, Lawrence of Fairfield’s Heather Gilman recorded an RBI single, and Skowhegan’s Kaitlyn Steward had a two-run single.

Bucksport’s Katie Hurd smacked a two-run double to deep right-center in the fourth to put the East ahead for good. Brunswick’s Emily Pollock hit a two-run homer over the 200-foot fence in left-center in the eighth.

Scarborough pitcher Griffin struck out four and allowed one hit in two innings of work. She also hit two singles and scored the West’s first run.
