A man who had fired several shots outside a Bangor home during a domestic dispute apparently turned the gun on himself after being confronted by police Thursday evening.

The man, whose name and address were not released, later died at the hospital, according to police.

Bangor police received a call just before 6:30 p.m. Thursday about an armed man shooting outside a house on Shepherd Drive in the Capehart section of Bangor. Witnesses later told police that the man, who was said to be in his 30s, fired several shots into the ground and into the air.

The man was kicking the door of a house trying to gain entry when police arrived, said Lt. Tim Reid. When confronted by police, the man promptly turned his weapon on himself, Reid said.

The man was taken by Bangor Rescue to Eastern Maine Medical Center. He died shortly thereafter of a single gunshot to the head, Reid said.

Police did not fire any shots during the incident. Reid declined to specify the man’s relationship to the occupants of the house late Thursday.

“It was a domestic situation,” Reid said. “That part is still under investigation.”

Shepherd Drive is a quiet side street of modest single-story houses and trailers in the Capehart section of Bangor.
