Orono Community Forums invites the public to attend its second event beginning with a potluck supper from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday, June 24, at the Keith Anderson Community House, 19 Bennoch Road in Orono.

Mazie Hough reports the forum focus is the Maine Film Academy’s 2007 Groundbreaking Activist Leadership Award-winning film, “There Ought to be a Law.”

After the meal, a brief introduction to the film will be presented, and the film will be shown from 7 to 8 p.m.

After the showing, two of the film’s three producers, Geoffrey Leighton and Anita Clearfield, will lead a discussion.

The event is free, but donations will be accepted to help defray expenses. Child care will be provided.

According to Hough, the film “follows Cathy Crowley of Lewiston in the months after her 18-year-old son bought a shotgun at Wal-Mart and killed himself.”

Although his mother “had no previous political involvement,” in 2005 she campaigned for a bill “that would require a waiting period before young people could buy guns.”

Hough describes the production as “an eye-opening film about the legislative and lobbying process.”

Crowley will attend and participate in the discussion.

Hough reports that OCF “seeks to promote public dialogue about issues that affect us all.”

If you’re in the Washington County area you should take in “Persephone and Demeter,” an art exhibit beginning with a free opening reception 5-8 tonight, at the University of Maine at Machias Art Gallery.

The free exhibit runs through Friday, July 27.

According to a UMM release, “The story of Persephone and Demeter has been celebrated in the Eleusinian Mysteries by both women and men for 2,000 years. There are many, many variations, both ancient and modern, perhaps the most famous being the Homeric Hymn ‘To Demeter,’ probably composed around 650 B.C.

“These artists are responding to this myth from the experiences of their own lives, each with their own aesthetic language.”

Bobbie Fowler and Margaret Baker invite you to the Old Town-Orono Animal Orphanage Yard Sale 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, June 23, at the Old Town garage on Airport Road.

You are invited to this large yard sale and to “pick up some treasures for the whole family,” Baker wrote of the rain-or-shine event.

She reports all proceeds benefit the Animal Orphanage, “which takes in stray animals from the Old Town-Orono area and gives them a safe place to live while they wait, patiently, for a home of their own.”

“The dedication of everyone involved is high, but so are the expenses,” Baker said while reminding readers that “some animals who are not adoptable, for various reasons, live out their lives at the Orphanage,” an additional expense.

Baker urges you to “come to the yard sale and show your support.”

The junior and senior high school Pilgrims of the Roman Catholic parishes of St. Gabriel’s in Winterport, St. Matthew’s in Hampden and St. Teresa’s in Brewer are raising funds for a summer trip.

A bake sale, car wash, bottle drive and yard sale will be held from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 23, in the parking lot of St. Matthew’s Parish at the corner of Route 202 and Western Avenue in Hampden.

“This summer journey,” reports parent Annie Gabbianelli O’Reilly, “takes close to 100 youth and adults to places like Notre Dame Du Cap Shrine, Sacred Heart Shrine of Beauvoir, and many other places of worship in Quebec and Montreal.”

The Bangor Humane Society invites you to its 2nd Annual Pet Appreciation Day 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, June 23, at the Bangor Waterfront.

BHS board member Cyndi Rollis reports the event includes “a Frisbee competition, demonstrations and introductions with police and service dogs, information about fostering homeless pets, the Mutt Parade, Silly Pet Tricks, exhibitions, kids’ litter box scoop, face painting, pet health information and much more.”

Canine Camp of Newburgh will offer nail trimmings for a $5 donation and corporate sponsor Don Hanson of Green Acres Kennel will offer several informational training sessions during the day.

Afternoon music will be provided by Lemon Grass.
