Commissioner’s Award

HAMPDEN – Commissioner Susan A. Gendron has recognized Superintendent Richard A. “Rick” Lyons of Hampden as the recipient of the 2007 Commissioner’s Award. Lyons serves as school superintendent for SAD 22 – Hampden, Newburgh and Winterport. Lyons was recognized at the 96th annual Maine School Superintendents’ Conference Award banquet and dinner, which was held in Bar Harbor.

The Commissioner’s Award is given each year to a school superintendent in recognition of outstanding service and contributions made to Maine’s public education system, its students and its residents.

Gendron presented the 2007 Commissioner’s Award to Lyons before an audience of nearly 100 of his colleagues and their guests.

“Rick is a leader in education who is very active and passionate about his work for the children of Maine,” she said.

Lyons, a Fulbright scholar to Japan, has played an instrumental role as a member of the School Health Leadership Network and served as a national speaker representing Maine and its work around coordinated school health programs.

Lyons is an active member and past president of the Maine School Superintendents’ Association, has served on several legislative committees and has been a strong legislative voice for Maine schools, contributing his knowledge on various topics including student health and teacher issues.

SAD 22 and its students consistently perform well on the Maine Educational Assessment test and Lyons currently oversees a major renovation project at Hampden Academy.

SkillsUSA National Winners

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Several students from area high school and college technical education programs recently won the nation’s highest awards at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference.

. Ashley Nadeau of Old Town, a student at United Technologies Center in Bangor, was awarded the secondary bronze medal in basic health care skills.

. Charles Rackley of Bangor, a student at Eastern Maine Community College in Bangor, was awarded the postsecondary bronze medal in welding.

. Team P, consisting of Jon Hyatt and Kevin Sennett, from United Technologies Center in Bangor, was awarded the secondary silver medal in video product development.

Industry leaders representing more than 1,100 businesses, corporations, trade associations and unions recognized the students for their demonstrated excellence in 87 occupational and leadership contests such as robotics, criminal justice, aviation maintenance and public speaking.

“Over 5,000 students from every state in the nation came to compete in the SkillsUSA Championships this week,” said SkillsUSA executive director Tim Lawrence. “This is the SkillsUSA partnership at its best. Students, instructors and industries are working together to ensure America has a skilled work force and every student excels. These students prove that career and technical education expands opportunities.”

Industry support of the SkillsUSA Championships is valued at more than $30 million in donated time, equipment, cash and material. All contests are run and judged by industry experts using industry standards for employment. Contests assess hands-on, employability and academic skills.

More than 1,200 industry judges participated this year.

All student winners received medallions. Many also received prizes such as tools of their trades or scholarships to further their careers and education. The SkillsUSA Championships is for high school and college-level students who are members of SkillsUSA.

Arizona State University

TEMPE, Ariz. – Deirdre Reilly has earned a master’s degree in speech and language pathology from Arizona State University. Reilly is a 2000 graduate of Wheaton College, Norton, Mass., and a 1996 graduate of Hampden Academy. She is the daughter of Karen and Wayne Reilly of Hampden.

Bates College

LEWISTON – Several area students graduated May 27 from Bates College.

. Kyle Curtis, bachelor’s degree in English. He is the recipient of the John Tagliabue Prize for Creative Writing in 2007 and was on the dean’s list four times. A graduate of John Bapst Memorial High School, he is the son of Craig and Sande Curtis of Dedham.

. Benjamin Keller, bachelor’s degree in sociology. A graduate of Hampden Academy, he is the son of Gary and Holly Keller of Hampden.

. Scott Rosenthal, bachelor’s degree in history. A graduate of Bangor High School, he is the son of Robert and Barbara Rosenthal of Bangor.

Bentley College

WALTHAM, Mass. – These area students were named to the president’s list for the spring semester at Bentley College:

To be named to the president’s list, a full-time student must achieve a 3.7 or higher grade point average.

. Lauren Brown, degree in chemistry. A dean’s list student, she is the daughter of Daniel and Mary Brown of Stillwater.

. Mikaela Bolduc, degree magna cum laude with distinction in French studies. A dean’s list student, she is the daughter of Stephen and Katherine Bolduc of Bangor.

Margosia Jadkowski was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Colby College. She is the daughter of Mark Jadkowski of Hampden and Margaret Southworth of Winterport.

Framingham State College

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – Josiah Curtis of Brewer was named to the dean’s list and the president’s list for the spring semester at Framingham College. For the president’s list a student must have been named to the dean’s list for three consecutive semesters.

Macalester College

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Stephanie Kleinschmidt was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Macalester College. A graduate of Bangor High School, she is the daughter of Susan McGarry of Glenburn.

Hassell was a member of the Student Senate, track and cross country team and the student newspaper. He received a student fellowship in politics. A graduate of Hampden Academy, he is the son of Mary and Lewis Hassell.

Saint Anselm College

MANCHESTER, N.H. – David Wright of Bangor was named to the dean’s list for the second semester at Saint Anselm College.

Springfield College

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Area residents named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Springfield College are:

University of Vermont

BURLINGTON – These area students graduated in May from the University of Vermont:

KeyBank Mitchell Scholars

Sixteen students, one from each county in Maine, became the first class of KeyBank Mitchell Scholars, and the first members of their families, to graduate from college this year.

The KeyBank Mitchell Scholarship program was created in 2003 to help students become the first members of their families to attend college. Each student receives $1,500 a year from KeyBank N.A. toward a four-year degree. To date, KeyBank N.A. has donated $336,000 to the Mitchell Institute to fund scholarships.

In addition, the Mitchell Institute supports the students with regular communication and exchange of ideas through a weekend leadership conference, summer fellowships and career coaching.

“We are very pleased to be able to support this valuable scholarship program each year,” said Richard Lucas, president, Maine District, KeyBank N.A. “It is vitally important to support the educational aspirations of the next generation of Mainers. We need to provide opportunities so they are equipped with the knowledge and skills they will need to become our state’s next leaders.”
