Central Maine Community College in Auburn will expand its athletic department this fall, adding men’s soccer, men’s and women’s volleyball and a co-ed golf program for the 2007-08 school year.
The school now offers men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and softball. The athletic department’s expansion is in direct response to student demand, according to athletic administrator Dave Gonyea.
“We will have 250 students living here, and the students want more services and opportunities,” Gonyea said in a press release.
Gonyea added that he anticipates women’s soccer and lacrosse being added “within a year or two.”
The men’s soccer, women’s volleyball and golf programs will kick off their inaugural seasons this fall, with the men’s volleyball team beginning play in the spring of 2008. Money for the new programs will come from fundraising and a student-activities fund.
Henning is new Colby coach
Karen MacCrate Henning, who won two national lacrosse titles as a player and another as a coach, will take over the Colby College women’s lacrosse program next spring.
Henning spent the last eight seasons coaching at the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University, starting the program in 1999. She compiled a 103-21 record at C.W. Post.
Henning takes over a Colby team that was 26-9 record over the past two seasons, including a trip to the NCAA Division III tournament in 2006.
Henning was an attacker on the 1995 and 1996 University of Maryland teams that won national titles and finished undefeated in both seasons. She was a first-team All-American both years and finished her collegiate career with 78 goals and 76 assists.
