SEARSPORT – A dominant pitching effort by Tyler Miles and a strong all-around performance by center fielder Miles Davee propelled the Waldo Wildcats to a 9-8, 10-2 American Legion Zone 1 baseball doubleheader sweep of Presque Isle on Saturday.
The wins improved Waldo to 12-3 before Sunday’s game against Motor City of Bangor, and left the Wildcats one game behind zone-leading Trenton, which moved to 13-2 by sweeping Hampden on Saturday.
Presque Isle, which faced two nine-inning games Sunday at Hampden and at Bangor, fell to 8-7.
Miles, a lanky lefthander who will be a senior at Mount View High School in Thorndike this fall, struck out 14 and walked no one while yielding five hits and one earned run in the second game.
“I had a good fastball with a lot of movement on it today, and the curveball was working good at times,” Miles said.
Miles threw 122 pitches, and made his only mistake in the top of the seventh when Presque Isle’s Tom Desjardins smashed a solo home run to straightaway center field.
“He’s always mentally prepared,” said Waldo coach Emery Shute. “He’s a hard worker. When he’s not pitching he’s working on his pitching. He’s a great kid, and he’s got a heavy ball or something. Sometimes the thing just falls off the table.”
Davee, a recent graduate of Camden Hills of Rockport who will attend Bates College this fall, hit two doubles in the second game, including a two-run shot to left in the third inning when Waldo scored three runs to extend its lead to 10-0.
He also doubled and singled twice in the opener, and finished the day 5-for-7 with three doubles, three runs scored and four RBIs.
“I’m seeing it well,” said Davee. “They were throwing a lot of fastballs, and that helps out for me.”
Davee also made a pair of diving catches in the outfield, including one on a sinking line drive by Desjardins to end the first game with the tying run on base after Waldo had built a 9-0 lead.
“I knew it was hit really hard, a low line drive, and as it got close I could see it was knuckling all over the place,” Davee said. “It was so low that I knew I had to come in on it, and that helped out.”
Noah Burke hit a two-run homer in to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, and Davee hit a two-out, two-run double to left-center in the second to make it 4-0.
The Wildcats added five runs on five hits and three Presque Isle errors in the third, with Davee contributing his third hit in as many innings and Burke and Ethan Jean each adding an RBI single.
Presque Isle countered with six runs in the top of the fourth. Five were unearned after a two-out outfield error, and Mike Cleary capped off the comeback by lining a three-run home run to left-center to cut the gap to 9-6.
The Wildcats made it a one-run game an inning later on a walk to Harry Austin, a double by Devin Hersey and RBI singles by Bennett Cassidy and Hunter Caron.
Presque Isle had a chance to complete its comeback in the sixth but had two runners thrown out at the plate. Matt McGlinn doubled and Austin walked to open the inning. Hersey then doubled to right-center, but Caleb Ashey fielded the ball and threw in to shortstop Jake Arthers, whose relay throw to catcher Casey Ashey nailed McGlinn at the plate.
Cassidy, the next batter, grounded to Waldo third baseman Josh Nickerson, who quickly threw home to cut down Austin and preserve the Wildcats’ lead.
“The kids were very focused and they knew what to do with the ball when they got it,” said Shute.
Waldo struck for five runs in the first inning of the second game, with Burke hitting an RBI single and scoring on Nickerson’s two-run homer to left. Arthers – who had four singles in the doubleheader – and Casey Ashey both followed with RBI singles.
Gabe Blodgett’s RBI double and a sacrifice fly by Burke extended the lead to 7-0 in the second.
