Brewer, Hampden rolling Senior teams post 2nd wins; seek World Series berth

BANGOR – Brewer and Hampden advanced to a winners bracket showdown after recording victories in the District 3 Senior League All-Star baseball tourney at Mansfield Stadium Monday.

Brewer beat Old Town 5-2 and Hampden edged Bangor 5-4 for their second wins in the tourney to set up a 7:30 p.m. Sunday game.

Bangor and Old Town will now try to battle back through the losers bracket on Friday as Bangor will play at 5 p.m. against the Wednesday winner of the Holbrook vs. Orono-Veazie game. Old Town will play at 7:30 p.m. against the Wednesday winner of the Katahdin Valley vs. Glenburn-Levant game.

The winner of the tourney qualifies for the Senior League World Series in Bangor, which begins Aug. 12.

In Monday’s first game, Pat McEwen pitched six strong innings and Chase Daniels singled twice with three RBIs to lead Brewer to the win.

McEwen struck out seven while allowing one unearned run on three hits.

Zack Mansell hit an RBI double for Old Town.

In Monday’s second game, Justin Rodgerson’s two-run single sparked a four-run sixth inning and led Hampden to the victory.

Winning pitcher Brad McCluskey allowed six hits in seven innings while throwing 82 pitches. He didn’t walk a batter. Johnathan Johnson had two singles and an RBI.

Nate Frazier had a double, single and two RBIs for Bangor.

At Bucksport, Zach Merrill doubled, singled and knocked in three runs as Bucksport One won in four innings.

Ryan Grindle singled three times to knock in two runs while Carter Dresdin doubled and tripled for the winners. He also got the win on the mound.

At Blue Hill, Curtis Farrin doubled in a run to lead Coastal past Sunrise.

Brett Ingraham had three singles for the winners.

Dylan Whitten singled for Sunrise.

At Bangor West, Spencer Valley allowed just one run on six hits to lift Brewer into today’s championship round against Bangor East.

Ben Pushard, Valley and Kyle Alexander all singled for Brewer.

Carl Farnham had two singles for Bangor West, which was eliminated.

Bucksport 10, Ellsworth 2

At Bucksport, Ryan Bailey and Cody Dow each singled twice and Andrew Giosia and Tyler French both doubled as Bucksport avenged its only loss and eliminated Ellsworth from the District 1 Junior League baseball tournament.

French also pitched a seven-hitter with five strikeouts and one walk.

Bobby Box singled twice and Chase Bickford added an RBI single for Ellsworth.

At Ellsworth, Kaitlyn Cundiff pitched a one-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts to lift the Calais past Ellsworth.

Mallory Black singled twice and scored a run while Jasmine Ross doubled for the winners.

Bridget Jordan singled for Ellsworth.
