WINTERPORT – Winterport’s newest comedy troupe. Open Stage Improv, will present “Kicking Off the Festival” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3, at the Wagner Middle School, Mountainview Drive. Tickets are $5 and are available at the door. The show is recommended for mature audiences. Proceeds from concessions will be donated to Save the Steeple, a fundraiser for the restoration of the steeple on the historic Union Meeting House in Winterport.
“Improvisational comedy is just as much fun to watch as it is to perform,” said Jeri Misler, director and company member. “It’s unplanned, unrehearsed, unexpected material. The audience provides the topics and we run with them. We get suggestions ranging from dishwater parachutes to surfing squirrels. Our motto is to say yes to whatever suggestions we get.”
The performance title refers to Winterport’s second annual Music Festival, Saturday, Aug. 4, the day after the improv show. Festival planners want the weekend arts event to attract tourists and they asked Misler about making the theater a part of the weekend.
“Winterport, in addition to being a beautiful riverfront town, is home to a great community of talented artists, musicians and performers,” Misler said.
The improv performance marks the third time the Open Stage Improv Company has performed in Winterport since its inception in 2005. The troupe is hoping to take its show in the road and perform in the Banor area this year. In addition to Misler, company members are Suzy Curry, Jenny Hart, Martha MacLeod, Scott Misler, Cassy Palmer, Kathryn Ravenscraft and Gary Sund.
