Penobscot Nation Boys & Girls Club of Indian Island is hosting its first Putt for the Club Golf Tournament, and it is a special one, indeed.

Putt for the Club begins with registration at 8 a.m. and a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at Palmyra Golf Course, 147 Lang Hill Road in Palmyra.

Carla Fearon, golf club director, told me that through the generosity of a grant received by the Waterville Boys & Girls Club, the golf club is able to offer a very special live auction item: a VIP dinner for a four-member team with baseball great Cal Ripken Jr., Sunday, Sept. 9, at the Alfond Youth Center in Waterville; a round of golf in a tournament the next day, at which he will be present for photographs and autographs; and breakfast and a lobster dinner at the tournament. The total value of this auction item is $2,500.

The four-member team entry fee for Putt for the Club is $400 and includes golf, snacks and a barbecue.

Sponsorship levels are Gold, $2,000; Silver, $1,000; and Bronze, $500, and hole sponsorships are $200.

Prize donations also are being accepted from individuals and businesses, and other prizes and contests will be offered, including a 2007 Harley-Davidson Road King Classic by Central Maine Harley-Davidson for a hole-in-one, and Samsung 23-inch televisions for closest-to-the-pin and longest drive.

Jann Votaw informs us the Bridgewater Historical Association will be host to an ice cream night at its regular music show at 6 tonight, at the BHA Hall, formerly the Odd Fellows Hall, in Bridgewater.

“Make a donation and get a dish of ice cream,” Votaw wrote. Proceeds from your donation will help with “the purchase of a much-needed” public address system for the facility.

Richard Young of Glenburn reports Toys for Tots of the Marine Corps Reserve is partnering with The Red Barn Campground for Christmas in July Friday-Sunday, July 20-22, in Holden.

The event includes Christmas music, decorating campsites, a blood drive and a visit from Saint Nick.

Donations of new, unwrapped toys can be left in boxes on site. Young wrote that “all donations stay within the Bangor area” for local children.
