Hancock Woman’s Club plans chicken barbecue

President Charline Sheridan, organizers Eunice Phillips and Fran Trefts and members of Hancock Woman’s Club invite you to their annual chicken barbecue 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, July 28, at the Community Center, U.S. Route 1, Hancock.

From local people who “look forward to meeting their neighbors at this popular event,” wrote Jackie Nicholson, to first-timers who “discover the barbecue” as they drive by, everyone is welcome.

Nicholson wrote the meal “is still only $7 for chicken hot off the grill, homemade salads and desserts, rounded off with rolls, watermelon and beverages.”

Audrey Peasley wrote that Keepers of Brooksville Baptist Church will hold a giant yard sale at 7 a.m. today at the Club House at the intersection of Routes 175 and 176 in Brooksville Corner.

All proceeds benefit church repairs.

Patricia Henner, director of Page Farm and Home Museum at the University of Maine in Orono, invites you to Open Farm Day 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, July 22, at Page Farm and more than 80 other Maine farms and museums.

The event is free and open to the public.

Also, Daniel and Gail VanWart invite you to visit Peaked Mountain Farm 10 a.m.-2 p.m. that day, at 16 Ellery’s Lane, Dedham.

“Well-behaved, responsible owners” are welcome to bring leashed dogs, they wrote.

Pianist Charles Jones performs for the SummerKeys’ Mary Potterton Memorial Concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, at Lubec Congregational Christian Church. Admission is free, donations are accepted, and intermission refreshments will be provided by Lubec Landmarks.

Kay Byther Eames reports the second annual Summer Evening Musicale with young Kneisel Hall artists will be 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, at All Souls Congregational Church, 10 Broadway, Bangor.

The series is sponsored by Congregation Beth Israel and the All Souls’ Arlan A. Baillie Performance Series. Admission is free and a reception will follow.

Intern Katie Ludwig wrote that the Husson Capehart Health Center of Penobscot Community Health Care will hold a health fair for residents of Capehart, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday, July 26, at the health center, 86 Davis Road, Bangor.

Blood pressure and glucose monitoring, other health and safety information, and appearances by representatives of the Bangor fire and police departments will be included, as will be refreshments, games, activities and giveaways, from bike helmets to a weekend kayak rental from Bangor Ski Rack.

Brenda Hall reports the public is invited to attend Mount Desert Island Hospital Business After-Hours from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, July 26, on the third floor of the Bar Harbor hospital.

She invites you to celebrate the opening of the hospital’s new intensive care unit, patient rooms and waiting area.

It is sponsored by the hospital and Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce. Refreshments and a tour will be offered.

The East Grand Dames Book Group is beginning its 11th summer schedule, wrote Pam Taylor.

The group meets Wednesday mornings and serves light refreshments. The meeting dates and sites are July 25, Forest City; Aug. 1, Pemberton Ridge, New Brunswick; Aug. 8, Balm of Gilead, Green Mountain, New Brunswick; and Aug. 15, Forest City.

This summer’s books are “The Secret Life of Bees,” “Mountains Beyond Mountains” and “Intuition.”

The group welcomes “any and all interested readers,” and encourages you to “just come to socialize and become acquainted.”

For the Milbridge-Wyman United Methodist Church, Alicia Woodward invites you to a pancake breakfast 6-9 a.m. Saturday, July 28, at the Masonic Lodge, Kennedy Highway, Milbridge.

The cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children. Proceeds benefit the purchase of fuel oil for the church, Woodward wrote.

Next is a Hymn Sing at 7 that evening, at the Milbridge church at the head of the Wyman Road in Milbridge, Woodward wrote.

“All donations from this event will go toward buying sheets for our troops in Iraq.”

You are invited to “A Meeting with Bo Lozoff” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 120 Park St., Bangor.

The award-winning singer-songwriter, author and activist is founder of Human Kindness Foundation and its internationally acclaimed Prison-Ashram Project, according to a release.

The free event is sponsored by several local and state church and nonprofit organizations.
