They have a new coach, a new field they will unveil next Wednesday and a bunch of new faces.
Husson College men’s soccer coach Scott Warman, who never had a losing season in his seven years as the boys coach at Orono High School, had just five days of preseason prior to a season-opening 4-0 loss to Notre Dame College (N.H.) over the weekend.
But he saw some positive signs and is excited about the future.
“We didn’t generate a lot of chances but our midfield play was excellent,” said Warman. “Notre Dame had already played three scrimmages and a regular season game. And they were a very good team, especially up front.
“We progressed during the game. We played much better in the second half. We’re getting better every day,” added the 34-year-old Warman. “Our guys never give up. We’ll outwork a lot of teams.”
He said his adjustment has been a smooth one so far.
“It has been tremendous. I was worried about how I would bond with the players and how they would respond to me. That has been the easiest part. The whole team has bonded quickly. And coaching during a game isn’t that much different than it was in high school,” said Warman.
Junior right back and tri-captain Gus Demos has been impressed with the new coach.
“He’s an excellent coach. He’s the best I’ve ever played for. He gets input from the team and relates very well to us,” said Demos.
The Braves went 9-5-1 a year ago and were top seeded in the Maine Athletic Conference tournament only to be upset by St. Joseph’s of Standish 2-1 in the semifinals.
They placed four players on the All-MAC first team and another on the second team.
None of the five are back.
But they do have four seasoned veterans back in Newport’s Demos, French central midfielder Daouda Diedhiou, right midfielder Sean Ward of Limestone and striker Dave Richard of Corinna.
Peter Jellie, who also received playing time a year ago, will be a defensive midfielder. Other midfielders include Kosei Nishi and Michael Dineen. Dineen has been the sweeper but 28-year-old freshman Michael McCarron has just joined the team and will probably become the sweeper, according to Warman.
That will enable him to move Dineen to outside back or midfield.
Senior Amadou Thiam could give the team a significant boost in the midfield or up front if he is able to play. He has been bothered by a knee problem for two years.
Richard, junior Khoa Nguyen and sophomore Kosuke Nakajima will be the strikers. Richard was one of the team’s leading scorers last year.
The Braves will be young in the back and in goal.
Freshman Cliff Urquhart of Eastport will be the goaltender.
“He’s a quick learner and a very hard worker. He made 19 saves against Notre Dame and some of them were elite,” said Warman.
A revamped fullback corps includes freshmen Matthew Bouchard of Washburn and Aaron Cowan of Rockland and junior Joaquin Pinzon along with Dineen and McCarron.
Thomaston’s Frank Maltais can play midfield or fullback.
Warman said he likes having a tough early-season schedule “because it will force us to get better and will expose our weaknesses.”
“This team has really good potential,” said Demos. “As the season goes along, we’re going to develop in leaps and bounds.”
