BANGOR – The steel beams beginning to create a new skyline on lower Main Street are those of the future permanent home of Hollywood Slots, and it’s just the beginning, according to the facility’s spokeswoman.
All the steelwork currently being put up is for the 152-room hotel. Two tall towers (one nearly framed) will be seven-level staircases.
“All the steel that you see there is hotel,” spokeswoman Amy Kenney said Tuesday. “The gaming facility will be coming shortly.”
The steel for the gaming building construction is expected to arrive Aug. 13.
The following week, about 1,000 pieces of pre-cast concrete to build the parking garage will be hauled down from St. John, New Brunswick.
“Each piece weighs between 45,000 and 65,000 pounds,” Kenney said. The concrete is made in Canada and will be trucked across the border and likely down Route 9 because the loads will be too heavy to meet the legal weight limit on Interstate 95.
“There should be no major disruption to traffic,” Kenney said.
Hollywood Slots’ parent company, Penn National, now is operating out of an interim facility in the former Miller’s Restaurant building just yards away from the construction site. The new facility will allow the operation to more than triple the number of slot machines from about 500 to the authorized 1,500.
Kenney said construction at the permanent site is on schedule and within the anticipated $131 million budget. She said the building is slated to be weather tight by November, and will be open for business next July.
“Cianbro’s got us right on schedule and all is well,” Kenney said.
