Ozone levels may be high in parts of state

Ground-level ozone concentrations may reach unhealthy levels today in the southwest coast and midcoast sections of the state, according to the Maine Department of Environmental Protection.

The DEP said the air will be best in the western mountains and the northern part of the state and moderate in other interior regions.

The DEP cautioned in a press release that some residents may experience shortness of breath, coughing or throat irritation in the most affected areas.

The department recommends people avoid strenuous activity, close their windows and circulate air with a fan or air conditioner, and avoid using aerosol products.

For more information, call the DEP’s ozone hot line at 800-223-1196 or visit www.MaineDEP.com and click on “Maine Air Quality Forecast.”
