Atkinson boy, 11, drowns in Sebec Lake

DOVER-FOXCROFT – Local police have determined that an 11-year-old Atkinson boy drowned accidentally Monday at Sebec Lake.

The body of Maurice Mahar was found in shallow water by people standing on the public beach off Cotton Brook Road, according to Lt. Scott Arno of the Dover-Foxcroft Police Department.

Police received an emergency call about 6 p.m. advising of a possible drowning, Arno said Tuesday.

The boy was pulled from the water, and a nearby camp owner and bystanders conducted resuscitation efforts until emergency personnel arrived. The boy, who was at the beach with family members, reportedly had been in the water only a few minutes, Arno said.

Maurice, the son of Luke and Norma Mahar, was taken to Mayo Regional Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft and was pronounced dead about two hours later, according to Arno.

The State Medical Examiner’s Office, which conducted an autopsy Tuesday, ruled that the boy died by drowning.
