Climber injured in fall at Acadia Park Massachusetts woman, 45, suffers bumps, bruises after losing her footing

ACADIA NATIONAL PARK – A Massachusetts woman was flown by LifeFlight helicopter to a Bangor hospital Monday after falling and landing on her back while rock climbing in the park, according to rangers.

Tresann Avenia, 45, of Holden, Mass., was in stable condition Monday evening at Eastern Maine Medical Center, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Avenia was climbing Monday morning near the Precipice Trail on Champlain Mountain when she lost her footing, Ranger Arthur Shettle said. She was lead-climbing, periodically clipping her rope to anchors in the rock while her climbing partner belayed her from the bottom of the cliff, he said. She fell about 15 feet and landed on a sharp rock on her back.

An anchor Avenia had placed into the cliff face to catch her if she fell came loose as she lost her footing, Shettle said. Another anchor lower on the rock face was too low to catch her weight before she hit the rock, he said.

Shettle said Avenia has 12 years climbing experience and was wearing a helmet when the accident occurred.

Rangers were notified of the accident just after 11 a.m. and responded to the call with members of the Mount Desert Island Search and Rescue team. They secured Avenia, loaded her into a litter and carried her to an ambulance at the base of the trail. She then was taken to a waiting helicopter at the ball field in Bar Harbor.

Shettle said Avenia broke some ribs and had some bumps and bruises but otherwise was “generally doing fine.”
