Vacancy in Maine House declared, election set

AUGUSTA – Another vacancy has been declared in the Maine House of Representatives.

Gov. John Baldacci and Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap have signed a proclamation calling for a special election to replace Rep. William Walcott, a Lewiston Democrat who has resigned.

The proclamation, addressed to members of the Democratic, Green Independent and Republican Committees of District 72, announces the vacancy and orders a special election to be held on Nov. 6.

Meanwhile, Republicans in Maine House District 27 have nominated Peter Johnson of Greenville as their candidate for state representative in another special election to be held on Nov. 6.

The District 27 seat is vacant due to the death of Rep. Earl Richardson, R-Greenville, earlier this month. Democrats have nominated a former legislator, Sharon Libby Jones of Greenville.

In House District 93, a special election will also be held Nov. 6 to fill a House seat vacated by the resignation of Republican Randy Hotham of Dixfield.

Democrats have nominated Sheryl Briggs of Mexico and Republicans scheduled a nomination caucus for Wednesday.
