More than 100 pots of day lilies – four varieties – are being offered for sale by members of the Hampden Garden Club who acquired the perennials from a local day-lily breeder, wrote club member Martha Whitehouse.

“We are pleased to be able to offer them to the public, all trimmed and potted and ready to be planted,” Whitehouse wrote.

Photos of the varieties will be available, so you will be able to see what you are receiving, she explained.

You can make this marvelous garden purchase from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at Harmony Hall on Kennebec Road in Hampden.

“Proceeds from the sale will aid in the electrical updating project that is currently under way at our beloved Harmony Hall, which has just been placed on the National Register of Historic Places,” Whitehouse wrote.

And, “even though day lilies are, notoriously, low-maintenance perennials,” she continued, day lily purchasers will receive “a day lily culture handout to help with planting and care.”

Finally, Whitehouse wants readers to know the garden club is a nonprofit group of gardeners, “of all abilities and ages,” who strive to learn and share garden expertise while having a lot of fun.

“We meet once a month, on Tuesdays, either during the day or in the evening. Anyone interested in joining our active group is encouraged to call Judy Luro at 942-7453.”

Johnna Lacey announces that Bangor Symphony Orchestra will conduct auditions at 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at Bangor High School on Broadway.

Open positions include principal viola; horn 3; contracted seats in violin, viola and cello sections; and substitute positions in all sections, she said.

Contracted musicians are paid on a per-service basis with mileage and housing arrangements included.

The inaugural Flattest Bike Ride in Maine bicycle ride begins with the 100-mile ride at 7:30 a.m., the 50-mile ride at 9:30 a.m., and the 25-mile ride at 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, at Cascade Park in Bangor.

The entry fee is $25 each or $40 for families, and features food, drinks, sweep vehicles, communication and maps.

The ride, which will take you north along the banks of the Penobscot River, benefits Shaw House programs, providing services to homeless and at-risk adolescents in central and northern Maine.

University of Maine women’s basketball coach Cindy Blodgett is the honorary chairwoman, and she and members of her team will participate in the run.
