PRESQUE ISLE – Four different players scored as the University of Maine-Presque Isle Owls rolled by the UM-Fort Kent Bengals 4-0 to win the Kickoff Classic championship Sunday in men’s soccer action.
Ahuntsic of Montreal beat Kings of Halifax, Nova Scotia, 7-1 in the consolation game.
Jay Johnson, Dustin Armitage, Brad Holabird and Matt Bouchard each scored for UM-Presque Isle. Bouchard, Aaron Miller and Ben Goodwin added assists. Jon Cole and Tim Dolley combined to make five saves on six shots.
Robby Nadeau stopped 12 of 19 shots for the Bengals.
UMPI’s Darren Belskis was named the tournament MVP. Owls’ Mark Barthelemy, Jay Johnson and Aaron Miller were named the to all-tournament team. UM-Fort Kent players Jay Plourde, Josh Roy and Charles Bard were also named all-tourney.
UM-Presque Isle 3, Kings 0
At Presque Isle Saturday, Jon Cole and Tim Dolley combined on the shutout as the Owls won a first-round game of their Kickoff Classic.
Darren Belskis, Jay Johnson and Mike Lane each scored a goal for UM-Presque Isle. Cole and Dolley stopped two of four shots.
Tim Kunz made 11 saves on 18 shots for Kings College of Halifax, Nova Scotia.
UM-Fort Kent 1, Ahuntsic 1 (OT)
At Presque Isle Saturday, the Bengals played to a tie but UM-Fort Kent advanced to the Kickoff Classic championship game by virtue of a 5-4 penalty-kick win.
Francois Monagen made eight saves on 12 shots for the Bengals.
Chad Bouchard stopped eight of 12 shots for Ahuntsic College of Montreal.
Maine 2, Sacred Heart 0
At Fairfield, Conn., Greg Bajek scored the game-winner in the second half and Luke Garner added an insurance goal as the Black Bears shut out the Pioneers.
Mat Cosgriff made two saves on 12 shots for Maine, now 1-2.
Gustavo Reaes stopped two of eight shots for Sacred Heart (1-2).
St. Joseph’s 1, UMass-Boston 0
At Standish, Chris Hughes netted the game-winner 11 minutes into the game as the Monks opened their season with a win.
Nick Wallace and Jeff Yaeger combined to save all three shots on goal for 1-0 St. Joseph’s.
Orlando Torres made sevens saves on eight shots for the 0-4 Beacons.
Massachusetts College 6, USM 0
At North Adams, Mass., Jameson Rigoli was one of six different players to score as the Mohawks rolled Saturday in the Holiday Inn/United Way Classic.
Rigoli also added an assist. Peter Ruckdeschel made five saves on five shots for Mass. College.
Jeff Gray stopped seven of 13 shots for Southern Maine.
Plattsburgh 1, USM 0 (OT)
At North Adams, Mass., Brad Fuller headed in a goal with less than two minutes left in overtime to give the Cardinals the win in the Holiday Inn/United Way Fall Classic Sunday.
Mike DiCrescenzo assisted on the winner for 3-1 Plattsburgh. John Schraner made two saves on four shots.
Jeff Gray stopped nine of 15 shots for the 0-3 Huskies.
Becker 2, Maine Maritime 1 (OT)
At Leicester, Mass., Dave Harbec scored two goals, including the game-winner 10:17 into overtime, to power Becker (1-1).
Harbec scored his first goal with 52 seconds left in regulation. John Checchi and Josh Hernandez combined for six saves.
Matt Corbin gave the Mariners of Castine a 1-0 lead in the second half off an assist from Derk Wilding. Daniel Loebel made 10 saves for MMA, now 1-1.
Women’s soccer
UM-Fort Kent 3, NSAC 1
At Fort Kent, Jess Gagnon scored all three goals for the Bengals in the consolation game of the Lady Bengal Kick-off Classic Sunday.
Mindy Blackwood and Cherrie Jefferson added assists for UMFK. Joy Gervais made 13 saves on 15 shots.
Alyson Bremner scored for Nova Scotia Agricultural College and Karen Spear made eight saves on 11 shots.
Unity 4, UM-Fort Kent 2
At Fort Kent, the Rams rallied from a two-goal deficit to post a first-round win Saturday in the Lady Bengal Kick-off Classic.
Rebecca Romanski’s score made it 2-1 and a Kyla LaPlante goal tied the game. Tasha Benoit netted the game-winner and LaPlante piled on an insurance goal. Raquel Ross had two assists and Romilly Harrison stopped eight of 10 shots.
Jess Gagnon and Megan Foreman tallied goals for the Bengals. Joy Gervais stopped 14 of 18 shots.
Holy Cross 2, Maine 1
At Falmouth, Caitlyn Dwyer knocked in the rebound of a direct kick as the Crusaders tipped the Black Bears Saturday .
Laura McSharry assisted on the game-winner for Holy Cross (3-1-1). Lee Hummer gave the Crusaders an early lead with a first-half goal. Christina Arsenault made four saves on seven shots.
Rachel Kennedy tied the game for Maine (1-1-1) on a penalty kick 38:43 into the first half. Naomi Welsh saved three of six shots.
Skidmore 1, Southern Maine 0
At Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Sarah Ingrahm’s first-half goal proved to be the game-winner as the Thoroughbreds won the championship game of the Skidmore College Invitational Sunday.
Hillary Trojano recorded the assist. Vicki Grilli made five saves on 12 shots for 2-0 Skidmore.
Marcy Ansely turned away two of seven shots for the 2-1 Huskies.
USM 3, Mount St. Mary’s 0
At Saratoga Springs, N.Y., the Huskies scored twice in the first half en route to a win Saturday at the Skidmore College Invitational.
Jen Young and Molly Tanguay each netted a goal in the first half for 2-0 Southern Maine. Amanda Loomis knocked in a penalty kick in the second half. Jenny Boucher and Tina West added assists. Marcy Ansley and Rachel Kwantz split time in goal and didn’t have to make a save on two shots.
Jillian Dilenno and Rachele Kempton combined for 12 saves on 26 shots for Mount St. Mary’s (0-2).
Thomas 4, Castleton State 3 (OT)
At Waterville, Amy Young blasted in an unassisted goal with two seconds remaining in overtime to propel Thomas to the win over Castleton State in the Thomas College Home Tournament Sunday.
Sarah Hopkins pitched in with two goals and Mary Pratt added a goal and two assists for Thomas. Young also had an assist. Kendra Pelow stopped 24 of the 31 shots she faced.
Beth Salesni, Meghan Wendell and Kendra Soblech all notched unassisted scores for Castleton State. Lisa Hasch made 25 saves on 33 shots.
Also on Sunday, UM-Farmington defeated Bay Path of Long Meadow, Mass. 4-0. Bay Path rolled over Thomas 7-0 Saturday.
UM-Farmington 10, Castleton 0
At Thomas College in Waterville, Richelle Dube scored two goals in the first half and added another in the second as the Beavers routed the Spartans Saturday in the Thomas College Home Tournament.
Stephanie Miller chipped in with two goals for UMF. Megan Woodcock, Jen Ireland added a goal apiece in the first half, while Jodi Dodge, Katie Sevigny and Erin Conant scored in the second half.
Lyndon State 6, Unity 1
At Fort Kent, Lacey Smith and Jill Gelardi each scored twice for the Hornets as they won the 2001 Lady Bengal Kick-off Classic Sunday.
Jennifer Hayes scored a goal and chipped in with two assists. Rachel Stinson also scored for Lyndon State of Lyndonville, Vt.
Jess Tetrault had two assists and was named the tourney MVP. The Hornets got to the championship game by beating Nova Scotia Agricultural College 6-0 Saturday.
Tasha Benoit scored the Rams’ goal off an assist from Raquel Ross.
Field hockey
Temple 4, Maine 3 (OT)
At Philadelphia, Andrea Duva scored the game-winning goal for the Owls on an assist from Melissa Decesaris.
Juliann Leskiw put Temple up 2-0 in the first half with her two goals. Regina Ruddy scored Temple’s third goal and April Herman had nine saves for 4-0 Temple.
Maine responded with two goals from Jen Johnstone within 1:02. Jana Ouelette scored the third goal for the Black Bears.
