Bangor woman charged after showing stolen ID

A Bangor police officer was flagged down early Sunday morning outside a bar by a man who said his girlfriend was driving drunk.

Officer Wade Betters spoke with the man on Franklin Street, near Club Fuzion, and minutes later pulled over Kristine Pike, 20, on Ohio Street, according to police reports. When Betters asked for identification, Pike provided a Maine license for Megan James, 21, he said. She reportedly told the officer that her boyfriend was just trying to get her into trouble.

Although Pike had been drinking, Betters reported that in field tests she did not “display enough impairment for me to charge her with OUI.” Since Betters thought Pike was 21, based on the false ID, he let her go, according to police reports.

Less than an hour later, at 2:12 a.m., Pike called police to report a domestic disturbance, and this time she provided the correct identification to a different officer.

Betters later made the connection and went to Pike’s home, where he confronted her for using a fake identification. Betters said Pike told him she had stolen James’ license from the woman’s boyfriend’s apartment. Betters summoned her with operating without a license because of the zero tolerance violation for being under 21, possession of liquor by consumption and possession of a false ID. Betters also indicated in the police report that the district attorney could charge Pike for the unlawful use of a license. (Toni-Lynn Robbins, BDN)

Bangor police tackled a Bangor man to the ground and then used a Taser on him after he tried to steal a DVD from a convenience store early Monday morning.

Matthew Fernald, 30, ran from the Irving Mainway on Main Street after the store clerk confronted him about the DVD he had tucked under his arm and concealed with his sweat shirt, according to police reports.

When police spotted Fernald on Buck Street he ran, and he only stopped after officers threatened to use the stun gun on him, according to police. When he did not respond to numerous commands to lie on the ground, police tackled Fernald and told him to put his hands behind his back, according to police reports. Fernald allegedly kept his hands tucked under his chest and ignored several commands to put his hands behind his back. Police said they then used the Taser to subdue Fernald and put him in handcuffs.

Police later found the sweat shirt and two bottles of beer near where the chase began but were unable to determine if the beer was stolen. Fernald was charged with theft, refusal to submit to an arrest or detention, and probation violation. His court date is set for Oct. 11. (Toni-Lynn Robbins, BDN)
