Four PASS feature races conclude series Sunday Event set at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway

Tom Mayberry, the president of the Pro All-Stars Series, calls it the “marquee” event for PASS.

It’s the PASS 400 Weekend and it will culminate with racing on Saturday and Sunday at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough.

There was racing for the Oxford Plains Speedway and Beech Ridge midweek drivers on Thursday night and practices for all of the weekend racers will be held today.

Qualifying for all divisions will be held Saturday beginning at noon and there will be feature races for the Road Runner and Wildcat/Strictly Street classes later that day.

On Sunday, all four PASS features will be held beginning at noon.

There will be a 75-lap Outlaw Late Model race, a 100-lap Sportsman (Limiteds) and a 40-lap Modifieds race before the Super Late Models have their longest race of the year, a 300-lapper.

“We’ve tried to make it a fall tradition. We work on it off and on all year,” said Mayberry. “We’ve paid a lot of attention to it the last two months. We try to make all of our races successful, but we build our season around this race.”

Mayberry had wanted to work out a deal with Beech Ridge owner Andy Cusack for several years, and it finally came to fruition three years ago.

“We wanted to race in a real nice facility in an area with a lot of restaurants and hotels. There’s a lot for people to do. People can come down from Canada and we have the [Maine] Mall [in South Portland] right there.

“That’s pretty important because race week goes for two or three days and the wives aren’t going to want to be at the race track every day,” added Mayberry. “And the track is right near the interstate. It really works well.”

Mayberry credited Cusack and his staff for the help necessary in putting together the weekend.

“They do a great job helping us with that. We’ll have around 200 cars in the pits on Saturday and Sunday,” said Mayberry.

The PASS Super Late Model 300 field will be bolstered the inclusion of former Busch North (now Busch East) legends Kelly Moore of Scarborough, Brad Leighton of Center Harbor, N.H., and Dave Dion of Hudson, N.H.

“They’ll add a lot to it,” said Mayberry.

Johnny Clark, the defending PASS Super Late Model champion who is currently fourth in points, concurred.

“Those are big names for a race like this. When I was a kid, I dreamed about running door-to-door with someone like Dave Dion,” said Clark.

“The fact it’s the longest race of the year makes it the most important race,” Clark added. “If you win this race, it gives you bragging rights. This is one of the best Super Late Model races in the country. I don’t know of any others that have 300 green-flag laps.”

Clark also said Beech Ridge Motor Speedway is a first-class facility.

“It’s a beautiful place. I really do enjoy racing there,” said Clark.

The Rowes have won the first two PASS Weekend races at Beech Ridge with Mike Rowe winning the inaugural race in 2005 and son Ben taking the checkered flag last season.

Ben Rowe is currently leading the points with 2,601, 31 ahead of his father.

Hollis’ Richie Dearborn is third with 2,556 points followed by Clark with 2,535 and Trevor Sanborn of Parsonsfield with 2,482.

Correction: A headline on the Sports section front page in Friday’s paper pertaining to this weekend’s four Pro All-Stars Series features at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough incorrectly stated that this will be the series’ final weekend of auto racing. There are two more races after this weekend for each of the four classes.
