Hazard-waste collection scheduled

Editor’s Note: This story ran in Friday’s paper with an incomplete list of towns and contact numbers for more information.

BANGOR – Bangor Public Works at 530 Maine Ave. will be host to the region’s annual household hazardous waste collection day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6.

The event is free to residents of participating communities who sign up in advance.

Residents who want to drop off household hazardous waste on collection day should make a list of items they would like to bring to the collection event, then visit their local town office no later than noon Friday, Oct. 5, to register in advance.

Those who do not preregister will be charged a $10 disposal fee.

Each resident will be allowed to bring up to 15 gallons of household hazardous waste as well as one computer, one monitor, one keyboard and one television per permit.

To obtain a permit, participants must show proof of residency, a list of the types of materials to be discarded and approximate quantities.

Items that can be disposed of during the hazardous waste collection include oil-based paint, used antifreeze and turpentine, brake fluid, transmission fluid, chemical fertilizers, fungicides, herbicides, pesticides, paint remover and thinner, varnish, fluorescent lamps, rat poison, linseed oil, mercury thermometers and thermostats, used motor oil, rechargeable batteries, old gasoline and other items upon authorization.

In addition, mercury rechargeable batteries, used to power rechargeable toys, hand tools, some appliances, watches and laser pointers, can be brought to the collection site for proper disposal. Regular alkaline batteries, such as those used in flashlights, can be disposed of with regular trash.

All products must be in their original container with labels attached and securely closed.

Secondary containers for all products must be clearly marked and securely closed.

Participants should transport their items in leakproof containers placed in cardboard boxes. The boxes should be transported in the trunks of cars, or in the beds of pickup trucks.

Trained attendants will unload the product containers at the collection site.

Items that cannot be discarded as part of the regional program include:

. Latex paint, which should be allowed to air-dry before being discarded in regular trash.

. Aerosol cans that cannot be emptied.

. Car, lawnmower and boat batteries can be disposed of by returning them to the place of purchase or through arrangement with Industrial Metals at 947-3710.

. Propane gas tanks can be turned in to Amerigas on Green Point Road in Brewer. Call Amerigas at 989-4930 for disposal fees.
