DOVER-FOXCROFT – Another step in the town’s downtown revitalization plan was taken Monday when selectmen hired a consultant for Project Canopy.

Kirby Ellis of Hudson will inventory the town’s trees and craft a tree plan for the town for $7,000. He will have the assistance of a Tree Committee consisting of Peter Brenc, Jackie Robinson, Cynthia Freeman-Cyr, Jane Stitham and Steve Tudor.

Also on Monday, selectmen learned the town received a $10,000 planning grant to study the redevelopment of the Moosehead Manufacturing Co. plant.

Part of the downtown redevelopment plan is for green space and the study will help toward that end, Town Manager Jack Clukey said Tuesday.

The town received a $4,000 grant to help offset the cost of the inventory.

Regarding the revitalization plan, Clukey said the town has completed its facade improvement program and is now focusing on the riverfront off South Street.

“Our goal is to combine the redevelopment work with the MDOT’s reconstruction project, which hasn’t gone through the design stage yet,” Clukey said. He said he will be happy when the DOT proceeds with that plan.

The town intends to move the utilities to the other side of the road to provide an unobstructed view of the Piscataquis River and to add a walkway on the river side, Clukey said. The plan also includes moving the Chamber building off the riverbank closer to the road, he said.

Other projects include changing the configurations of the islands; widening the sidewalks from True Value to Bigelow’s Travel Agency, and adding benches and plantings. Clukey said he hopes this project can be done when the DOT upgrades the drainage on Pleasant Street.
