BAR HARBOR – A communications company is looking to boost its network coverage in the Mount Desert Island area, but that doesn’t necessarily mean people will see towers sprouting up across the landscape from the top of Cadillac Mountain.

After preliminary voter approval last week, the town of Lamoine is in talks with Verizon Wireless about letting the company erect a cell phone tower on town-owned land off Route 184.

The company also has made inquiries in Bar Harbor, but according to one company official, the only thing under consideration there is installing network equipment on existing structures downtown.

Verizon Wireless has been talking to landowners about where some of the firm’s equipment might be placed, but nothing formal has been submitted to the town of Bar Harbor, according to town and company officials.

“We’re still working on the pieces here,” Richard Enright, Verizon Wireless’ director of network performance for New England, said Friday. “We want to cover as much [area] as we can.”

Verizon Wireless’ current network does not extend south of Ellsworth toward MDI, according to Enright. He said the Lamoine tower would be one of multiple sites that would help connect downtown Bar Harbor to the rest of its network.
