Wyman to market cancer-fighting juice

MILBRIDGE – Hoping to capitalize on consumer interest in the cancer-fighting properties of wild blueberries, Jasper Wyman & Son announced this week that its new juice product delivers the antioxidant value of one-half cup of wild blueberries per serving.

Antioxidants are believed to combat cancer, and researchers at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Center on Aging at Tufts University say wild blueberries have the highest natural concentration of antioxidants among 40 fruits and vegetables tested.

The wild blueberry also appears to reverse some of the memory loss associated with aging, according to the researchers, who recommend consumption of a half-cup of blueberries per day as a natural means to boost antioxidant intake.

“This new beverage is the easiest way for consumers to get that one-half cup’s worth of blueberry antioxidants,” said Ed Flanagan, Wyman’s chief executive officer in a news release describing the product.

Fred Robinson, director of research and development at Wyman’s, said the new product is 100 percent fruit juices and is the result of a year of research and development.

The beverage will be sold in New England retail markets, packed in 32-ounce glass bottles under Wyman’s name.

Jasper Wyman & Son is the largest wild blueberry grower and processor in the United States. It owns and manages more than 7,000 acres of wild blueberries in Washington County.
