Columbia woman indicted in Cub Scouts theft

BANGOR – A Columbia woman was indicted Monday by the Penobscot County grand jury in the theft of more than $1,000 from Cub Scouts in Milford.

Kimberly Blakely, aka Kimberly Beal, 24, is charged with theft by unauthorized taking from Cub Scout Pack 80.

Few details were available Monday from the Penobscot County District Attorney’s Office, but Blakely allegedly had access to the troop’s checking account through her secretarial job.

If convicted, she faces up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $20,000. She also could be ordered to pay restitution.

In unrelated cases, three people were indicted for collecting unemployment benefits last year while working.

Kim A. Dowling, 38, of Old Town, Jason F. Golden, 30, of Brewer, and Ronald O. Harding, 35, of West Enfield are charged with theft by deception.

A few unemployment fraud cases a year are turned over to prosecutors, according to Michael Roberts, deputy district attorney for Penobscot County, after the Department of Labor is unsuccessful at collecting reimbursement.

How much prison or jail time an individual convicted of the crime faces depends on how much money was involved. Terms of incarceration range from six months in jail to 10 years in prison. Defendants also could face fines and are expected to be ordered to pay restitution.

The amount of the unemployment benefits Dowling, Golden and Harding each received illegally was not available Monday.

All of the people indicted this month are scheduled to be arraigned Friday, Oct. 26, in Penobscot County Superior Court.
