PROVIDENCE, R.I. – National Grid officials say they have abandoned plans to expand a liquefied natural gas terminal in Providence.
National Grid bought KeySpan Corp. this summer, inheriting the company’s plan to build a larger LNG terminal at Fields Point. State officials including Attorney General Patrick Lynch had opposed the idea, saying it was dangerous to locate the explosive gas in a city.
Last year, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission denied KeySpan’s proposal. Company lawyers appealed the decision.
In a written statement, company officials say they have withdrawn the appeal and will monitor natural gas needs in the region.
