Helicopters aid in capture of suicidal man

The Waldo County Sheriff’s Department issued an all points bulletin to area law enforcement just after 1 p.m. Wednesday for a suicidal 39-year-old male.

Just before 3 p.m. police officers from Brewer and Holden were informed the man, whose name was not released, was spotted on an all-terrain vehicle in the area of Clewelyville Road and Eastern Avenue near the town line of the two communities.

The area is also where helicopters are being used by Bangor Hydro Electric Co. to install high-voltage power lines. Sgt. William Birch of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department said the helicopter pilots helped officers to locate the man as he drove the ATV around in the woods.

Police also were assisted by the Maine Warden Service and Maine State Police.

At about 4 p.m. the man exited the woods and was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor for an evaluation. He was upset at first but went peacefully with officers. No charges are pending, Birch said. (Nok-Noi Ricker, BDN)
