Hosted by the 32nd degree Masonic Learning Centers for Children in honor of their late member, walkers register at 12:30 p.m. and walk at 1 p.m., rain or shine, Sunday, Oct. 14, at Bangor City Forest on Tripp Drive off Stillwater Avenue.

Participants’ pledges will be collected the day of the walk, and walkers can choose between a 3.1-mile walk or a 1-mile loop.

Funds raised will help dyslexic children learn to read and write with the assistance of the Masonic Learning Centers for Children in Bangor, a charity of the Scottish Rite Masons.

Dyslexia, according to the brochure, is described as a “disorder, which interferes with the acquisition and processing of language.” And although “dyslexia can’t be cured, it can be overcome.”

Locally, school-age children with dyslexia receive free, one-on-one professional tutoring at the Bangor center, which will benefit from this fundraiser.

Speaking of reading, Paula Baines, outreach chairwoman of St. James’ Episcopal Church in Old Town, invites children ages 3 to 7, “their parents, grandparents and caregivers” to participate in a new, monthly community event, Second Saturday Story and Craft Time.

The family literacy program kicks off at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 13, at the church on the corner of Center and Main streets in Old Town.

Baines explained the goals of the new program “are to offer opportunities for a free and fun family activity in [the] local community; help a child develop an interest in reading as we instill a joy of books and give children and parents a chance to be creative.”

The program will be offered at the same time Saturday, Nov. 10, with a Thanksgiving-themed craft and the same time Saturday, Dec. 8, with a winter-themed craft.

What a wonderful adventure is in store for members of the Spanish class of Penquis Valley High School in Milo.

Stacy Slagle reports those students are in the process of raising funds to travel next spring to Spain, and you can help them get there simply by enjoying a delicious meal.

A Harvest Dinner, featuring boiled ham with fresh vegetables, rolls and assorted pies for dessert, is 5-7 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 13, at Milo Town Hall.

And the cost? It’s just a donation at the door with all proceeds benefiting the PVHS Spanish class trip to Spain.

Slagle wrote that “the veggies are being donated by a local farm” and “all pies will be homemade” and will include “apple, pumpkin and chocolate cream.”

Dan Williams reports reservations will be taken through Monday, Oct. 15, for the Harvest Dinner to benefit the Howard Foundation Sunday, Oct. 21, at Clewley Farm Restaurant in Eddington.

Seating is limited and dress is semiformal.

The fundraiser features live music and an introductory garden tour before dinner.

The menu feature hors d’oeuvres, a choice of soups, garden salad and your choice of roast prime rib, baked half chicken or roast pork with seasonal pie for dessert.

Diane Batty reports Child Development classes at Hampden Academy will host a nursery school for children ages 3 to 5 for two hours a week, two days a week, 8:30-10:30 a.m., beginning Tuesday, Oct. 23, and running through Thursday, Jan. 10.

“The framework of the nursery school includes Learning Discovery centers, creative art projects, nutritious snacks and circle time,” she wrote.

Its purpose “is to provide high school students the opportunity to plan and practice using developmentally-appropriate activities for the preschool-aged children” who “will have the opportunity to play and interact with others in a safe and well-supervised learning environment.”

East Millinocket resident Edith Tibbitts will celebrate her 90th birthday Monday, Oct. 29.

Jean Segee wrote that she knows the well-known local resident, who served for many years as East Millinocket’s town clerk and tax collector, would certainly enjoy “a shower of cards from all her many friends.”
