ELLSWORTH – Police pulled the body of an unidentified man out of the Union River on Wednesday afternoon.

People walking near the municipal dock noticed the body floating near the town pier about 3 p.m., according to Lt. Harold Page of the Ellsworth Police Department.

Officers Jason Clarke and Chad Wilmot and Detective Dotty Small went to the town dock to retrieve the body.

The dead man was a white male who appeared to be in his late 40s, according to Page.

Although officers did not check for identification, the lieutenant said the man did not appear to be a local resident.

There was no indication of how the man had died, Page said, adding that it was obvious the body had been in the water for at least a couple of days.

“We have an idea who it might be, but the positive ID has to come from the medical examiner,” he said.

A funeral director from the Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home in Ellsworth took the body to Augusta, where officials from the state Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy today.
