GUILFORD – Selectmen have received preliminary concept drawings of what the Braeburn block would look like according to a plan by a California couple.

Guilford native Jeanine “Jen” Samuel and her husband, David, of San Rafael, Calif., submitted drawings for their multimillion-dollar project for review and comment by town officials. The concept plans show the facade of the historic Edes building incorporated into environmentally friendly buildings joined on each side by a glassed-in walkway.

“I’m pleased,” Town Manager Tom Goulette said Tuesday of the concept drawings. While there are no plans to restore the Edes building, Goulette said he is pleased the facade of the Edes building will be saved and included in the project.

To stimulate economic development, the town solicited proposals for use of the Braeburn block that included the Edes building. Of the two that were received, the proposal submitted by the Samuels was selected. Under the arrangement, the couple agreed to pay the town $25,000 for the property and agreed to donate a significant portion of the profits from the development to local schools Jeanine Samuel had attended.

The couple also have honored a promise to work cooperatively with local merchants, residents, town officials and organizations to craft development suitable and desirable to the community.

Ideas generated by residents for the new construction have included a consignment shop, a craft shop, a cultural arts center, a community center where young and old could mingle, an Internet cafe, an outdoor recreation business, a carpet store, an ice cream shop, a hands-on museum for children, historical exhibits, an information center that could promote local resources, a day care center, a fitness center, professional offices for a dentist and a certified public accountant, an indoor playground and open space for gatherings.

In addition to revitalizing pride in the community, Samuel hopes the project will entice local college graduates to return home to ply their skills.
