Winterport Open Stage will take its audience to the world of a 1950s homemaker competition when it presents “Mrs. California” by Doris Baizley.
Step back in time to 1955 when the Mrs. California competition is attempting to find the perfect homemaker, one who can set a flawless table, sew an apron, iron a man’s shirt and prepare a meal.
Representing Los Angeles is Dot, a former member of the WAVES who served as a decoder in World War II. Dot is coached by a local gas company sponsor, Dudley, and her brassy best friend, Babs. While Dudley wants to play by the rules, Babs is willing to do just about anything to ensure that Dot is triumphant. Torn, Dot must decide whether she should do what she is told or what her heart tells her is right.
“Mrs. California” combines hilariously absurd contests, based on actual 1950s homemaking competitions, with thought-provoking glimpses into the lives of women in 1955.
The play is directed by Jenny Hart. Cast members are Hillary Roberts, Steven Douglas, Brianne Beck, Rich Carlson, Susan Currie, Rose DeGennaro, Erika Lougee, Paul O’Reilly and Cassy Palmer.
The play will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 2-3 and 9-10, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, at Wagner Middle School, Mountainview Drive. Tickets are $8, $5 seniors and students, at Rebecca’s in Bangor, Schacht’s True Value in Hampden and Molly’s in Winterport. For information, call 941-9151 or visit www.winterportopenstage.com.
