Charleston to observe Old Home Days event

CHARLESTON – Two local women will be recognized tonight for their efforts at making the community a better place.

Harriet Duthie and Margaret Higgins will be the subject of special presentations at 6 p.m. at the local school during the start of the annual Old Home Days celebration, sponsored by the Charleston Historical Society.

In addition, the Charleston School Organization will conduct an auction at the school and the historical society will sponsor a variety show. Refreshments will be on sale.

At 9 a.m. Saturday, there will be coffee and homemade doughnuts for sale at Faith School of Theology; a yard sale at the United Baptist Church parsonage; a book sale at the library and an open house at the historical society’s room.

Participants in the annual parade will line up at 9:30 a.m. at the Christian Hill Road for the 10 a.m. parade.

A scrap-box derby will be conducted at 11 a.m. and soccer games will be held at 1 p.m. at Higgins Field.

At 1 p.m. there will be all-terrain vehicle, tractor and pedal tractor pulls. From 4 to 7 p.m., there will be a chili and home brew registration on the Shute Road and a bean and casserole supper served from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Charleston Elementary School.
