Oprah’s magazine touts Raye’s mustard

EASTPORT – The national spotlight is again focused on a local couple who make mustard.

Oprah Winfrey, the Chicago maven of talk, has included Raye’s Mustard Mill of Eastport in the November issue of O, the Oprah Magazine.

Karen and Kevin Raye own the fourth-generation Eastport business.

In a section titled “Eater’s Digest: What to do with the rest of the Bird,” the magazine highlights a turkey, cheddar and apple sandwich recipe made with Raye’s Fall Harvest Mustard, a whole-seed cranberry mustard. The recipe describes Raye’s Fall Harvest Mustard as “one with clean pure heat and a wonderful, nearly luxuriant texture punctuated by tiny mustard seeds and bits of tart cranberries,” the mustard mill said in a news release.

“The Oprah piece is particularly special because it features two great Washington County products,” the Rayes said in a prepared statement. “Our Fall Harvest Mustard is made with cranberries from Bradshaw’s Cranberry Farm in Dennysville. It’s a great partnership between two local family businesses to produce a premier gourmet product.”

In May, the mill was featured in Martha Stewart Living magazine and on Stewart’s television show as one of “Martha’s Must-Haves from Maine.”
