How heartwarming it was to hear from Three Rivers Kiwanis Club of Milo and Brownville president Valerie Robertson that the organization is making preparations to recognize Veterans Day with its sixth annual Veterans Appreciation Dinner.

Seating for that special event begins at 11 a.m., followed by a POW-MIA ceremony presented by the American Legion at 11:45 a.m., and a turkey dinner “with all the fixings” served at noon at the Milo Town Hall Performing Arts Center, Robertson wrote.

“Last year, we served more than 120 area servicepeople, veterans and family members,” she added, pointing out that “the POW-MIA ceremony is one of the services’ most solemn and honored ceremonies, and it will be conducted in that honored tradition.”

“This day is a very special one for everyone involved, and we would like to extend an invitation to anyone who wants to attend.”

Some of the last year’s attendees, she told me, “came up from Bangor,” and Robertson wants to stress that this dinner is open to everyone, not just those living in the Milo-Brownville area.

Reservations are appreciated, however, and “if you would like to attend or have questions,” she wrote, “call 943-2324 or 943-7748.”

Second Congregational Church of Brewer secretary Leigh Butler invites you to the church’s Follow That Star Fair, 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at the church, 607 South Main St.

Featuring a luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the fair offers crafts, candy and baked goods.

Beth Lambert and supporters of What’s for Suppa Food Pantry invite you to attend On Stage in Mariaville, a benefit concert for the food pantry, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Mariaville Grange.

Admission is $5 for adults, $1 for children under 12. Coffee, tea and cider will be served free, and tasty desserts will be available for purchase.

The featured performers are Ray Lambert and Keith Davis “playing French Canadian dance tunes on harmonica and guitar,” Beth Lambert wrote.

You will also hear the Blue Hill Ceilidh Band “playing Celtic tunes on Scottish small pipes,” she added, along with “singer-songwriter Jimmy Barnes playing his original, Down East country-Eastern songs, and Rebecca Albright playing Celtic fiddle tunes.”

Chief Gary Duquette and members of the Orono Police Department invite you to attend their open house, 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Nov. 10, at the OPD.

The event features prescription drug returns, child fingerprinting, equipment demonstrations, photo opportunities, safety information, security tips, refreshments, door prizes and a bounce house.

You also will be able to tour the facilities and view equipment demonstrations while you meet and greet your Orono Police Department officers.

Credit cards will be accepted at the Grace United Methodist Church annual Holiday Fair from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at the church at 193 Union St., Bangor.

Coffee and doughnuts will be available in the morning; a light lunch served 11 a.m.-1 p.m.; and a take-home baked bean supper will be offered.

Gently used Christmas decorations, along with crafts and baked goods, are features of this fair, and the church’s Saving Grace Thrift Store will be open during the event.

To celebrate 100 years of theater on campus, University of Maine theater faculty members Marcia Douglas, Sandra Hardy and Tom Mikotowicz are inviting anyone who ever participated in UMaine theater to attend a reception after a performance of “Hedda Gabler.”

The reception follows the 7:30 p.m. production on Saturday, Nov. 10, in Hauck Auditorium, and will be held in the Hauck Lobby.
