Bowdoin holds off Colby Polar Bears win CBB series title

BRUNSWICK – Nick Tom blocked a Colby field-goal attempt and Tyler Tennant had an interception as the Bowdoin College Polar Bears shut down the Mules of Waterville in the fourth quarter en route to a 20-17 football win and the Colby-Bates-Bowdoin series crown.

Bowdoin’s Oliver Kell passed for 180 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another. Jeff Smith rushed for 116 yards on 26 carries.

Colby managed just 54 rushing yards. Billy Ryan passed for 159 yards and Sam Handler had 10 solo tackles, including three sacks.

UMFK Tip-Off Classic

At Fort Kent, Amber Garrison racked up 15 points, seven assists and five steals as UMaine-Fort Kent rolled to a 97-46 victory over Hesser Sunday in the UM-Fort Kent Tip-Off Classic.

The Bengals beat UM-Augusta 104-13 in Friday’s game while Hesser defeated UMA 46-30 Saturday.

In Sunday’s game, Ascilla Jeffers scored 14 points and Ashley Ames added 12 points for UMFK. Shir Fuchs had 13 points, four assists and five steals.

In Saturday’s game, Katie Edwards had 14 points, 14 boards, four blocks and four steals to pace Hesser. Aimee Dole added 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Lanpher had 13 points and 12 rebounds for UM-Augusta and Taylor had nine points and 16 boards.

In Friday’s game, Ames recorded 10 points, nine rebounds, five blocks and three steals for the Bengals. Garrison had 17 points and six steals and Alisa Licata added 14 points, five steals and four assists. Brittany Paul scored 14 points and Tara Waltz added 11 points. Shir Fuchs scored 10 points.

Gladys Lanpher and Jessica Taylor scored four points apiece for UM-Augusta.

UM-Fort Kent Tip-Off Classic

At Fort Kent, Andre Edmonds hit a 15-foot jump shot at the buzzer to lead Hesser College to the 88-86 victory over the University of Maine at Fort Kent in the UMaine-Fort Kent Tip-Off Classic Sunday. UM-Fort Kent beat UM-Augusta 88-74 in Friday’s game and Hesser defeated UM-Augusta 70-67 Saturday.

In Friday’s game, Jimmy Lopez scored 19 point to pace UM-Fort Kent and Hamill Bassue added 15 points. Edmundas Akstinas had 13 points and nine rebounds and David Gabriel had 10 points.

Chad Gray led the Moose with 25 points. Deon Cheers had 14 points and 12 rebounds and Eric Gagne posted 11 points.

In Saturday’s game, Kendall Walker totaled 19 points, 14 rebounds and seven blocks for Hesser College. Edmonds had 16 points and 12 rebonds and Kendall Walker added 13 points and 13 boards.

Cheers had 14 points and 12 rebounds for UM-Augusta. Gagne scored 16 points and Tyler Norris had 12 points.

In Sunday’s game, Walker had 20 points and 14 boards to lead Hesser. Tony Moore and Murrell both added 16 points.

Lopez paced the Bengals with 25 points as Bassue and Gediminas Sumyla both added 11 points.

At Orono, Megan Picinic scored the winner at 3:39 in overtime off of a Whitney Pappas assist as Robert Morris edged Maine in overtime Saturday.

Jordan Riley scored to tie the game at 2-2 in the third period for 5-6-1 Robert Morris. Sara O’Malley had a first-period goal and Brianne McLaughlin stopped 19 of 21 shots.

Amy Stech scored at 9:43 in the first period off assists from Jenna Ouellette and Taryn Peacock for the 1-10-1 Black Bears. Kaitlin Zeek made it 2-1 Maine on a Jordan Colliton assist with 19 seconds left in the first. Sarah Bishop stopped 37 of 40 shots.

Field hockey

Bridgewater St. 1, St. Joseph’s 0

At Bridgewater, Mass., Sunday, Katie Balboni scored at the 56:40 mark as No. 2 Bridgewater State College tipped No. 5 Saint Joseph’s College to win the ECAC Division III New England Championship.

The Monks defeated Plymouth State University in Standish on Saturday 1-0 to advance to the championship game.

In the championship game, Nicole Downs stopped all four shots to earn the shutout for 16-6 Bridgewater State.

Kathleen Simoes made four saves on five shots for 14-7 Saint Joseph’s.

In the semifinal game, Jillian Kimball scored off of a Jessica Baker assist at 37:08 in the second half for the Monks. Simoes blocked all eight shots.

Katie Randall made three saves on four shots for Plymouth State.
