Alfond’s gifts reached range of institutions

A selected list of charitable contributions by Harold Alfond or the Harold Alfond Foundation:

. $7 million for the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta.

. $3.5 million to Kents Hill School to build the Harold and Ted Alfond Athletics Center in 2001 and an additional $2.7 million for the construction of a lighted turf field.

. $5 million toward the Good Will-Hinckley School in Fairfield.

. $1 million for the Harold Alfond Student Center at Maine Maritime Academy in Castine.

. $2 million for an expansion of Alfond Arena at the University of Maine in 1991. In 2005, he donated a total of $1.25 million to help build the Shawn Walsh Hockey Center, adjacent to the arena that bears his name. Alfond also contributed $3.1 million to refurbish the Harold Alfond Sports Stadium at the Orono campus.

. $1 million toward completion of a four-story, 50,000-square-foot academic center at Saint Joseph’s College in Standish. A few years earlier, he gave $1.65 for a student recreation center and basketball facility.

. $1.25 million for construction of a $4.6 million student recreation and athletic facility at Thomas College in Waterville.

. $1 million to Husson College, which was used to construct the first artificial turf baseball diamond in New England.

. $2.5 million for the construction of a new on-campus apartment complex for seniors at Colby College in Waterville. Also contributed $3 million for the Harold Alfond Athletic Center at the college.

. Alfond also gave millions to many out-of-state colleges, including Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla., and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
